9 Trendy Basics That Will Become the Foundation of My 2022 Wardrobe
There are basics, and then there are trendy basics, and I'm here to talk about the latter, but you already knew that from this story's title. While I do think that every wardrobe needs its standard-issue white tees and blue jeans, today I'm here to rant about the basics that are a little more forward, a touch cooler, and 100% worth buying. Since I wear my basics constantly, I'm always on the lookout for trendier ones to update my closet with and I've landed on nine such versions that I already know will feature regularly in my 2022 wardrobe.
Below, you'll find the trendy basics I can't help but obsess over right now purely becuase their cool factor is on par with how versatile they are—and that's not always the case when it comes to basics. So continue on to get a glimpse of the staples I'll be incorporating into my ensembles all year long and, of course, shop my picks for each.
1. Minimalistic Knitwear
Knitwear is always in full force in my closet and this year I'm especially into minimalistic styles that act as a clean base for cool accessories. I just placed an order on the black dress my colleague Anna is wearing above and I can already tell I'll be wearing it a lot.
2. Striped Shirting
Oversized button-down shirts continue to be my most-worn staple but in particular I'm gravitating towards striped versions that lend a lightly preppy feel.
3. Ankle-Grazing Outerwear
As a New York resident, I've learned to rely heavily on my outerwear not just to finish off my outfits but sometimes to be the outfit, period. I adore long ankle-grazing coats for that reason because they cloak you in one chic silhouette. I think the Olsen sisters are onto something here...
4. Simple Mini Skirts
We've already pointed out how micro-mini skirts are going to be *the* trend for spring 2022, but I think the simpler styles can easily become staples you wear on repeat, too.
5. Slouchy Shoulder Bags
It might be time to put structured bags on hold, at least for the time being. Slouchier shoulder bags are really holding my attention right now and given their practicality and comfort, I can already see them becoming a fixture in all my 2022 ensembles.
6. Relaxed Denim
If 2022 will be defined by any staple, it will probably be for relaxed denim. The roomier fit lends a cool, lived-in look and with plenty of options to choose from in the market, you can go more classic or baggier depending on how you feel.
7. Tall Boots
Sorry if I sound like a broken record at this point, but I really can't stop wearing my knee-high boots. I thought the trend would have dwindled by now but they've actually remained a constant in my wardrobe and I keep finding new ways to style mine. Currently, I'm into wearing them underneath midi skirts.
8. Chubby Hoops
Hoops are my ultimate jewelry staple but lately, I've been putting my daintier pairs on hold for more substantial chunky shapes. I think the weightier feel lends more impact to whatever I wear them with.
9. Crewneck Sweatshirts
While it's definitely more on the basic than trendy end of the spectrum, oversize crewneck sweatshirts are a staple I'll be relying on a lot. I like that they can be worn with leggings and sneakers just as easily as they can be elevated with denim and heels like in the about look.
Up next, check out the simple outfit formula I'm guilty of repeating over and over.
