I Write About Fashion—These Are the 5 Things I'd Remove From Anyone's Closet
As a fashion editor, I often get the question, "What trends do you wish never existed?" And while I wouldn't use the word "never," there are definitely trends that my (or anyone's) closet could go without. Heading into the New Year led me to think a lot more about my own closet and those pieces that just don't serve me anymore.
I've been in the process of streamlining my personal closet into something more practical and wearable, one that will last me for years to come. This means building in more timeless staples and quality investment items, all of which inevitably sophisticate my overall wardrobe.
This includes tailored trousers, functional tote bags, and versatile slip skirts (to name a few). To aid in the initial phases of your closet update, I've listed below the top contenders for your donation bag. I've also included some worthy replacements to keep your closet fresh and elevated.
TOSSING: Parachute Pants
ADDING: Wide-Leg Trousers
Gone are the days of the lightweight, baggy parachute pants. I've substituted this fad for a wide-leg trouser that has longevity and purpose in your wardrobe. Pair that graphic T-shirt with trousers instead for an elevated look.
TOSSING: Bucket Bags
ADDING: Functional Tote Bags
Whenever I carry a bucket bag, I find it hard to carry it across the body and find it's always gaping open (which in a big city is an obvious hazard). Therefore, I would trade in this cylindrical shape for a highly functional, and also very on-trend, tote bag.
TOSSING: Chunky Loafers
ADDING: Sleek Flats
As I continue preaching on my practical-dressing soapbox, I find chunky lug-sole loafers are not on the list. I would gladly swap these for a dainty Mary Jane flat. These simple shoes also serve so many occasions.
TOSSING: Denim Maxi Skirts
ADDING: Slip Skirts
Although denim maxi skirts have been hugely popular this year (I have definitely participated), I think a more classic and timeless piece like a slip skirt is a much better investment. Not only is this one of the most versatile pieces you can own, but it's also one of the most sophisticated.
TOSSING: Oversize Hoops
ADDING: Chunky Sculptural Hoops
Oversize hoops have their place, but for something you'll get more usage out of, turn to a chunky sculptural hoop. Whether it be the viral dome hoops or a smaller pair with an organic shape, these earrings make for the perfect topping on any ensemble.
