Sorry, Cherry! The Coolest New Perfumes Decided Blackberry Is Fall's #1 Fragrance Note

Loyalists of the original Miss Dior Eau de Parfum ($115) might turn their noses up at this new twist, but I caution them against it. It's fruitier and moodier than the original, and it deserves just as much credit. The jammy blackberry note comes first, followed by honeyed elderflower, soft jasmine, and smoky oakwood. I describe the original Miss Dior as "sweet." I describe this one as "bold." Both are highly sophisticated but in different ways.

This new fragrance is a chypre scent, meaning it belongs to a category of perfumes that's often described as complex, mysterious, and alluring. They often feature fruit top notes, floral middle notes, and mossy or earthy base notes. For reference, Frederic Malle’s iconic Portrait of a Lady is a chypre scent.

Jo Malone's Blackberry Bay Cologne is iconic. Like all of the other brands' fragrances, this one is soft, subtle, and sophisticated. The ripe blackberry note is a given, but the green, herby one that follows close behind is an unexpected and elevated surprise. It's as if I'm smelling the ripe berries as well as the leafy foliage and stems that surround them. I imagine it's what a luxury bed and breakfast would smell like in the English countryside.

The 7 Virtues is a clean, sustainably sourced fragrance brand. Its scents are hypoallergenic, vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free. They’re made without phthalates, parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, or UV inhibitors and are infused with sugarcane alcohol. Even more impressively, The 7 Virtues formulates its perfumes with over 20% pure fragrance oil for the most long-lasting effect (the brand boasts that its scents last 24 hours and linger for up to 72 hours).

This one, Blackberry Lily, was just re-released by popular demand. The star note of blackberry is combined with blackcurrant (a fruit similar to blackberries, but with a more tart and acidic scent). This makes it especially fruit-forward. However, those notes are followed closely by a sweet and almost aquatic note of lily of the valley, as well as a hint of fresh (not powdery!) rose. It has a serene, almost zen-like quality to it, which is why I think it's the perfect option for people who usually avoid fruity fragrances.

If a blackberry and a clementine had a baby, this body spray would be it. This juicy, warm, and elevated scent is one of my favorite scents from Henry Rose (and that's saying something, as I own almost every single scent from the clean, genderless, fine fragrance brand). It's the scent of an orange orchard, ripening blackberry bushes, and the warm sun, bottled.

Key notes: Blackberry, lavender, ginger, honey

This is my current favorite hair perfume. Smooth lavender, jammy blackberry, zesty ginger, and sweet honey come together to create an intoxicating (albeit unexpected) scent. It's definitely unique—the type of hair perfume that's basically begging to become your signature scent. Beyond simply smelling good, it hydrates the hair and boosts shine thanks to an argan oil and honey-infused formula.

Leave it to Burberry to create a blackberry perfume that's A) utterly sophisticated and B) suits almost every event, situation, and season. Unlike other fruity fragrances that can veer too syrupy and immature, this one rests on a warm, creamy, and almost universally-loved base of vanilla, amber, and sandalwood. It's giving chic Londoner, and I love it.

Here's another perfume that combines blackberry with citrus exceptionally well. Chloé's Rose Tangerine Eau De Toilette is a sunny, citrusy rose scent with a soft, contemporary, and sophisticated vibe. It might not list its blackberry note in the name, but it's definitely detectable, giving the otherwise streamlined fragrance a tart, juicy quality. I'll leave you with one of my favorite customer reviews of this scent: It smells like "a fairy taking a bath on a lily pad."

This fruity-floral perfume is incredibly light and airy. I could compare it to a cloud, a feather, or the expansive blue sky. Either way, a hint of blackberry mixes with other semiaquatic fruit notes like grapefruit and pear. Meanwhile, a traditionally feminine mix of florals like jasmine and blue wisteria gives it a true-to-the-name dream-like quality. Last but not least, a hint of coconut water rounds it out.

This is the Italian take on a blackberry perfume. The ripe, juicy note is reinforced with raspberry, brightened with lemon, lightened with freesia, and grounded by white woods, musk, and ambrox. It smells like an expensive Italian sorbet.

Last but not least, I have to talk about one of my favorite blackberry perfumes: L'Artisan Parfumeur's Mure et Musc Extreme. The notes are simple—blackberry, lemon, and musk—but the scent is exceptional. It's sophisticated, jammy, bright, and grounded all at once. I think the brand puts it best: "A memory of fizzy fresh berries, long green grass, and the little white apron all set for blackberry picking on a sunny day."
