Pastel-colored candy hearts, oversize teddy bears, and bouquets are popping up everywhere, which means one thing: Valentine's Day is on its way, and you should probably be booking that appointment for your holiday manicure. That said, as fun as picking out your perfect look can be, if you're not as savvy with nail polish and a UV lamp, paying a visit to your trusted nail tech for your dream Valentine's Day moment might pose quite the challenge without having nail inspiration ready to go. (Scrolling through Pinterest can be fun, but time-consuming.)
Below, we're sharing our favorite nail looks for the holiday, ranging from delicate, romantic lace details that could give Wuthering Heights a run for its money, to subtle manicures with chrome finishes and playful polka dots. You'll also find trend intel and go-to polish selections from a professional international nail artist and a celebrity nail artist to get you started.
Which V-Day Designs Look Best?
While there is no one way to pull off a Valentine's Day worthy nail design that will earn you nonstop compliments, celebrity nail artist Elle Gerstein finds nail art with cat-eye hearts, micro sequin hearts, and jelly hearts particularly stunning. "These three techniques are all about layering and depth, and that's the difference between 2026 cat-eye; it has a lot of 3D texture and depth by doing the layers and adding the sequins," explains Gerstein. She tellsBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing that these designs bring light, depth, and textures to new designs. Olha Shtanhei, a professional international nail artist, highlights the refined, intentional, and emotionally expressive nature of this year's nail trends.
"We're seeing a strong move away from novelty hearts and overt themes toward designs that feel romantic through texture, color, and detail," Shtanhei explains. Soft micro-art, such as minimal heart outlines, abstract curves, or negative space designs, offers a modern look. Elevated French manicure variations will also be on the rise. "Think soft blush bases with tonal red tips, sheer milky finishes with delicate metallic lines, or subtle ombré fades," she says. While almond and soft shapes will continue to dominate, enhancing the elegance of these looks. "What really defines standout Valentine's manicures now is restraint," Shtanhei adds. "Romance is expressed through finish and balance, not excess decoration."
How Will This Year's Trends Be Different?
Shtanhei tells us the biggest shift in the Valentine's Day nail designs we'll be seeing this year is emotional maturity. In previous years, she tells us the holiday's nail looks leaned playful or themed, with bright reds, obvious hearts, and glitter-heavy designs, lending to a date-specific design. "In 2026, Valentine's manicures are designed to last beyond the holiday," says Shtanhei. "They're romantic, but also editorial and versatile, something you'd wear to dinner, work, or fashion week."
As for aesthetics, she explains these nail trends are influenced by runway beauty and minimalism when it comes to architecture, finish, and tone. "Rather than saying 'Valentine’s Day' at first glance, these manicures feel romantic," she continues. "That subtlety is what makes them modern and why they resonate so strongly with today's fashion-conscious audience."
When it comes to polish colors, Gerstein has landed on several of the best shades to create manicures you'll fall in love with. "The vibe is sheer pink like Mineral Fusion On Pointe ($10), real pink like Essie Bizarre You Ready ($10), red like Mineral Fusion Fast N' Fabulous or Essie Not Red-y For Bed ($9), glitter like Orly She's a Wildflower ($11), opal like Dior Montaigne ($30), pearl like OPI Glazed N' Amused ($12)," Gerstein says.

Vintage Valentine
Vintage-inspired nails have been on our radar over the past few months, but we're reminded of just how much we love them with this retro manicure. It has all of our favorite throwback details (including cherries and a minimalistic heart), with elegant gold touches on a milky white base.
Tiny Hearts
Sometimes, it's the tiny touches that make a manicure memorable, and this nail look captures the holiday's playfulness with a dash of red hearts against a milky pink base. It's the closest you can get to a clean manicure without giving up dainty details using Manucurist's Green Nail Polish in Red Velvet ($14).
Secret Admirer
This manicure has it all—from darling cherry details and red French tips to hand-drawn letter details from your secret admirer. The vibrant shades of red and crisp white with a whisper of gold really bring this cutesy nail look together.
Glossy Touches
Who says red, pink, and white are the only nail colors worth wearing this V-Day? Instead of sticking with the classic manicure trio, trade them out for a glossy black polish. If you're still craving a fun, Valentine's touch, add a negative space heart.
Lover's French
Last year marked the return of the French manicures, except this time around, they're back in chrome. Here's an updated take on the trend just in time for V-Day: tips created using red tiny, hand-painted hearts using OPI Nail Polish in Big Apple Red ($12).
Red Doily
Now and then, we love a modernized take on doily details. This nail look incorporates the Valentine's-coded decor with a chic, negative space design in red and gemstones for a glamorous touch. It's Euphoria meets a vintage V-Day card.
Reverse Polka Dots
Speaking of vintage nails, polka dots have piqued our interest lately (and that of other beauty tastemakers like nail artist Zola Ganzorigt). Here's a reversed polka-dot manicure that uses reversed color palettes in white and burgundy on almond nails.
Minimalist French
Another version of a Valentine's Day French manicure worth trying for this year is this one. It combines red, ultra-minimalist French tips with a dash of small hearts across each nail for a subtle nod to the holidays for lovers.
Red Velvet
For the past few winters, velvet nails have emerged in rich jewel tones that send us scrambling to make our next visit to the nail salon. These nails feature a jelly red velvet shade layered beneath a black base for a brilliant, crimson glow with a warm shimmer.
Glazed Polka Dots
Looking for more polka-dot inspiration? This manicure combines dainty, red polka dots with a pearly white base below a dusting of silver chrome. It's a subtle nod to the vintage print that will stay on trend long after the holiday has passed.
Classic Hearts
Some of our favorite timeless Valentine's Day nails feature traditional red hearts, and this sweet manicure by Iram Shelton has us falling in love. Notice how the heart gets slightly bigger, with the largest heart being on the thumb.
Heart Sprinkles
Deciding between going for a glossy manicure in one vibrant shade of red and eye-catching nail art ahead of your Valentine's Day plans? We think you should try both. This bold manicure combines fully polished nails with negative space hearts using Kinetics Shield Gel Polish in Victory ($13).
Winter Lace
Another nail trend we've been seeing everywhere lately has been lace, and we're expecting it to be everywhere this Valentine's Day. Here's a manicure that features the sheer, sweet design across each nail using OPI's Put It In Airplane Mode ($9) and Alpine Snow ($12) nail polish with lace foil.
Spaced-Out French
Clearly, red French manicures are for Valentine's Day festivities, so take this as your sign to add an unexpected twist to the nails. Here's a chic manicure featuring a negative space, French tip design using Essie's Fairy Tailor ($13) as a base and Rock the Runway ($13) polish for the bright pop of color.
Cherry Red
Valentine's Day and cherry red nail polish belong together—just take a look at this stunning manicure by Mateja Novakovia. The fiery shade is perfect for shorter nail lengths, and stands out with the negative space heart design using Kinetic's Shield Gel Polish in Absolute Catch ($13).
Lipstick Kisses
What would Valentine's Day be without lipstick kisses? This manicure by Shelton includes two red lipstick-kiss prints in varying sizes on the thumb with Essie's Gel Couture Longwear Nail Polish in Sheer Couture ($13) and Bubbles Only ($13), finished off with a topcoat.
Black Hearts
If you're feeling red nail polish fatigue but still want to wear a Valentine's Day manicure, opt for a Y2K-inspired design in an unexpected nail polish shade like The Gel Bottle's Gel Nail Polish in Jet Black ($19). This nail look by Charlotte Cliff was also created with the brand's Flexi Tips in Medium Almond ($30).
Love Letters
There's nothing more romantic than receiving a love letter, so we love the idea of wearing letters forming the word "love" on your thumb like in this nail look. The hand-painted design uses Essie's Gel Couture Longwear Nail Polish Sheer Fantasy ($13) and Like It Loud ($13).
