The Secret Drugstore Blushes That Rival 10 High-End Favorites
Affordable and stunning.

Blush is a beauty product that is looked over far too often. It's an essential step in a makeup routine that is subtle with promising results. Of course, bronzers and contour powders are great for an instantaneous Saint-Tropez moment, but what if you want to look a little more effortless? There's nothing like a quick hit of blush to liven up our complexion in a time of need or when we're aiming for a natural beauty look.
Blush's transformative powers make it easy to understand why it's one of the most important beauty staples among celebrities, makeup artists, and beauty editors. The best part? You don’t have to splurge to get a product that leaves you with a rosy flush. “A great drugstore blush should blend easily, have just the right amount of pigment, and last all day without turning patchy,” says celebrity makeup artist Christian Briceno. “Texture matters; if it feels silky and builds up instead of going chalky, you've got a winner.”
Since this staple can get pretty pricey, we did you and your bank account a favor by sharing 10 standout drugstore blushes that remind us of pricier, ultra-popular picks.
The Best Drugstore Blushes, at a Glance
- Best Overall: Nyx Professional Makeup Buttermelt Pressed Powder Blush
- Best Powder: Milani Baked Blush
- Best Liquid: Morphe Hot Shot Blush Drops
- Best Stick: Sheglam Buttery Bliss Blush Stick
- Best Cream: Milani Cheek Kiss Cream Blush
Best Overall: Nyx Professional Makeup Buttermelt Pressed Powder Blush
Pros: Silky formula, impressive pigment, long wear time
Cons: None we can think of
Formula: Powder | Shades: 12 | Coverage: High | Finish: Radiant and matte
To put it simply, this powder blush does it all. Its rich, buttery formula reminds me of Ilia’s new Soft Focus Blurring Blush because of its blurring, pigment-packed powder, and dimensional finish. It comes in a slew of similar shades, as well—from fuchsia to coral and baby pink—and you can nab it in glowy or matte finishes. It’s incredibly pigmented, so you don’t need much, and it blends like a dream. Just use a light hand for a natural flush (or do it up, it’s your world).
Customer review: “I love this blush! It goes in smooth and is buildable. Best of all, it is perfect for dark skin! I have mixed it with other colors and worn it alone. I recommend it 100%!”
Best Powder: Milani Baked Blush
Pros: Pigmented formula, glowy finish, easy to blend
Cons: TBH, no complaints
Formula: Powder | Shades: 8 | Coverage: Medium to high | Finish: Radiant
If you’re looking for a powder that doesn’t look powdery, try this glowy Milani blush on for size. This shimmery baked formula is flecked with reflective micropowders that make your skin look effortlessly radiant—onlookers would never guess it was powder. Plus, we can’t get over how much it resembles Stila’s Heaven's Hue Highlighter. No, really—it’s as glowy as a highlighter.
Customer review: “My new favorite blush! Be aware, it’s very pigmented so a little goes a long way. Absolutely beautiful colors with lovely shine to them. Quality rivals high-end brands at a much lower price. I’ve already bought two colors and will likely buy several more. Definitely worth it.”
Best Liquid: Morphe Hot Shot Blush Drops
Pros: Hydrating formula, easy to blend, buildable coverage
Cons: Expensive for the drugstore
Formula: Liquid | Shades: 5 | Coverage: Sheer to medium | Finish: Natural
We’re partial to the beloved Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Cheek Tint because of its pretty, glowy finish and easy-to-build coverage, but if we had to choose a drugstore brand instead, we’d go for these Hot Shot drops from Morphe. The silky liquid reminds us of the blendable formula that Addison Rae and Sabrina Carpenter favor, just without the hefty price tag. Plus, it’s infused with hydrating algae, moisturizing glycerin, and smoothing niacinamide for wear that doesn’t just look good but feels good too.
Customer review: “Love these blushes for my combo/textured skin! Adds a nice healthy glow without being too much. More pigmented than Glossier's Cloud Paints but very easy to blend. The colors are also very flattering on my medium olive skintone.”
Best Stick: Sheglam Buttery Bliss Blush Stick
Pros: Extremely easy to blend, beautiful finish, buttery texture
Cons: None we can think of
Formula: Cream | Shades: 7 | Coverage: Sheer to medium | Finish: Natural
This blush stick is one that associate beauty editor Alyssa Brascia was surprised to love as much as she did. “I have a collection of high-end blushes that I use on rotation, and this is the only budget-friendly option constantly in the mix,” she states. “It’s beyond easy to blend and layers like a dream—whether over liquid or cream foundation, or even on top of powder.” Its buttery consistency is one we’d liken to Rhode’s Pocket Blush, just at $6 a pop versus $25.
Customer review: “Super pretty blush! Creamy and supple! The color is gorgeous, and even though my skin tone is more tanned, I love that I can pair it with more Barbie-esque lipsticks than I normally would, and I love that they match well because of the harmony they give to the whole look!”
Best Cream: Milani Cheek Kiss Cream Blush
Pros: Easy to blend, plays well with other products, buildable
Cons: Might be too shiny on oily shades
Formula: Cream | Shades: 4 | Coverage: Light to medium | Finish: Natural
There aren’t many drugstore formulas that make us stray from our usual go-tos, but this cream blush might sway us. If you’re a fan of the Makeup by Mario Soft Pop Blush—but would like to give your wallet a break—we’d suggest this Milani cream formula in the interim. “It melts beautifully onto the skin, is buildable, and has a luminous finish that reminds me of luxury formulas, but at a fraction of the price,” says Briceno, this being a personal recommendation of his.
Customer review: “This formula is incredible and I honestly prefer it to my high-end cream blushes (Makeup by Mario, Haus Labs). It applies so smoothly over foundation, and even on top of powders. The color is easily buildable. Nude Kiss is the perfect blonzer shade.”
Best Multipurpose: Mineral Fusion 3-in-1 Color Stick
Pros: Watercolor coverage, glowy finish, versatile
Cons: On the pricey side
Formula: Cream | Shades: 4 | Coverage: Sheer to medium | Finish: Radiant
We fell hard for the Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Blush Stick when we editors tested it, but we won’t pretend it’s not pricey. If you want something similar in form and function at your drugstore, Briceno recommends picking up the Mineral Fusion 3-in-1 Color Stick. “It’s sheer but buildable, so you can go natural or bold without overdoing it,” he explains. “It feels high-end in texture and wear and can also be used on eyes and lips as a multitasker.”
Customer review: “I love this all in one blush, lip etc. Doesn't dry my skin out like some of the other brands I've tried. Blends nice, adjusts to skin for a healthy glow. Small for price, but lasts awhile.”
Best Luminous: Essence Pure Nude Baked Blush
Pros: Glowy, silky texture, easy to blend
Cons: Nothing to complain about
Formula: Powder | Shades: 8 | Coverage: High | Finish: Radiant
If radiant blushes are your thing, you’ll want to pay attention to this baked formula from Essence. We’d liken it to the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush, not only for its silky texture but for its glowy wear. “I have a longtime, die-hard love for this collection of blushes from Hourglass,” says Beauty Director Erin Jahns. “While I won't be banishing my current supply anytime soon, I will say that this Baked Illuminating Blush from Found is the closest drugstore dupe I've found.”
Customer review: “It’s super pigmented and a little goes a long way. It’s the best drugstore powder blush that I have ever tried. I would immediately repurchase!”
Best Matte: L'Oréal Paris Infallible Fresh Wear Soft Matte Blush
Pros: Large product for the price, high pigment, long-wearing
Cons: Not the largest shade range
Formula: Powder | Shades: 3 | Coverage: High | Finish: Matte
It's true—no blush can ever compare to Nars Orgasm Powder Blush’s icon status. That said, this pop of pink from L'Oréal is pretty darn stellar and is one of the most flattering drugstore blush formulas we've swiped in a long, long time. (Oh, and did we mention that the pan is bigger and the price tag is significantly smaller? Just saying.)
Customer review: “Most blushes by the end of the day have disappeared, even high-end ones. This however, actually does stay put. When I get off work at the end of the day, I still have blush on. Makes it a winner in my book!”
Best Hydrating: e.l.f. Cosmetics Putty Blush
Pros: Pumped with skincare ingredients, never looks greasy, easily portable
Cons: Nothing to add here
Formula: Cream | Shades: 8 | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural
For the ultimate juicy pop of color, this launch from e.l.f. Cosmetics boasts a similar likeness to the above favorite from Chantecaille. Both formulas burst with hydrating ingredients and are cruelty-free and vegan. Though it’s a hydrating formula, the product applies like a cream but wears like a semi-matte powder, so it never looks greasy. Plus, the packaging is small and secure, meaning it’s easy to pack in your makeup bag for vacations.
Customer review: “As a woman in her 50s, I feel like… the formulas I've relied on for decades just aren't sitting right anymore on my more mature skin. The powders I've always had to rely on to combat oil now make me look older and cakey! This is my first foray into the world of cream blush so I can only comment on this product as I haven't tried any others but started here due to the price point as I'm only experimenting with the formulation for now.”
Best Value: Essence The Blush
Pros: Lowest price on this list, long-wearing, buttery texture
Cons: Limited shade range
Formula: Powder | Shades: 2 | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Matte
We all remember Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Blush, right? This cruelty-free, best-of-the-best drugstore blush from Essence has a similar brand ethos to Tarte's, and this matte-finish blush bears a striking resemblance to the latter’s iconic formula in that it keeps shine and dewiness at bay, lasts all day, and is highly pigmented for the perfect pop of color.
Customer review: “This is my very first blush and it did not disappoint at all. The perfect pink for my skin tone and works very well on top of makeup. The inexpensive price is a bonus, too. I’m definitely adding to my favorites!”
What to Look for in a Drugstore Blush
- Texture: When it comes to any good blush, texture is paramount. The best blushes, whether available at the drugstore or in the luxury aisle, are smooth and silky to the touch. Each should blend beautifully, whether against bare skin or on top of varying foundation formulas, and they should have some staying power.
- Formula: To best decide which formula you should use, first assess your skin type and the kind of base you start out with. If you lean oily and prefer powder foundation to balance your skin, perhaps try a cream blush to bring a bit of luminosity back to your complexion (or you can double down on powder, if you wish). On the other hand, dry skin might benefit from hydrating liquid blushes, like e.l.f Cosmetics Putty Blush.
- Shades: This one is entirely personal, but it’s something worth considering when picking your next favorite blush. If you prefer rosy reds, peachy pinks, or maybe even an eclectic lavender, you’ll want to make sure that your blush of choice has an option that works with your skin tone and fits your makeup routine.
Where should you apply blush on different face shapes?
There’s certainly not a one-size-fits-all application technique for blush, but if there were one universal tactic, Briceno recommends this: “Apply blush high on the cheekbones and slightly toward the temples. It lifts the face without dragging it down,” he says. But if you want to really enhance your features with specific placement, Briceno has a few tips for different face shapes:
- Round: “If you have a round face, placing blush a little higher helps elongate and slim the look. Starting at the outer cheek and blending up toward the temples.”
- Oval: “Oval is the most balanced shape, so you don’t need to ‘correct’ much. The key is to keep blush placement natural and not too low. Start at the apples of the cheeks and blend slightly upward and outward toward the temples. This enhances your natural bone structure, giving a lifted, polished look without overdoing it.”
- Heart: “With heart-shaped faces, the forehead is usually broader and the chin narrower, so blush helps to balance everything. Apply blush just below the apples of the cheeks and blend outward, but keep it soft; you don’t want it too high or too close to the nose. Adding a little warmth along the outer edges of the face (near the temples) can also soften the width at the top and bring harmony. Just keep it diffused and avoid harsh edges.”
Which type of blush is best for a natural look?
Your application technique will determine whether or not your blush looks the most natural (i.e., a light hand for a watercolor wash of color, brushing powder foundation over the edges of your blush if you have harsh lines, etc.), but there are certain products that will give you a more realistic flush than others with less technique.
“Cream blush is the easiest way to get a natural, skin-like flush,” says Briceno. “Something that blends seamlessly into your foundation or bare skin, giving you a healthy glow without appearing powdery or dry.” We personally suggest the Milani Cheek Kiss Cream Blush as our favorite drugstore cream blush, which offers a healthy pop of color while looking effortlessly natural.
How We Tested
We found the best drugstore blushes by testing various budget-friendly options until we came across tubes and compacts that reminded us of our pricey, higher-end favorites. Then, we consulted with celebrity makeup artists to see which products they prefer, and why. From there, we garnered information on the best application techniques, things to look for in blush texture, and the down-low on different types of formulas, before making our final list of winners (and comparing them to their high-end counterparts).
