It's easy to assume that if a serum or cream is expensive, it means that it's better or it will magically erase any skin damage you might be dealing with. As a beauty editor with years of experience, though, I can definitely say that's not always the case. Sure, there are some incredible high-end brands that I think are 100% worth the money (shout-out to Eighth Day and Luzern Labs!), but I also don't believe that good skin has to cost you your firstborn child.

Whether you're in need of a little hydration, exfoliation, brightening, or a vitamin C serum, there's definitely a serum at the drugstore for that. Don't believe me? Just ask dermatologists! There are a few key drugstore serums for your face that don't cost a fortune but still do the most for your skin. For a bit more on how to shop for a serum at the drugstore, keep scrolling. I'm breaking it all down ahead.

FAQs

What should I look for when shopping for a serum at the drugstore?

When shopping at the drugstore for a face serum, Camp has a few tips. "When shopping for a serum, first determine what your skin concerns and goals are," he explains. "Common concerns include anti-aging, dark spots/hyperpigmentation, acne, and dryness."

You'll also want to make sure you're keeping your skin type in mind when shopping for a serum. Someone with dry skin may find that some water-based hydration serums are not enough for them, while those who are acne-prone may find that creams and serums with heavier oils are too much for them. Talk to a dermatologist to help you determine your skin type and needs. They might also be able to recommend you a few drugstore serums that will work well for you specifically.

What key ingredients can all skin types benefit from?

Everyone's skin is different, and if you have sensitive skin, it's important to always do a patch test before trying a new product. However, Camp says there are a few key ingredients that all skin types can benefit from.

Hyaluronic acid: "Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient from which most skin types can benefit. A naturally occurring compound in the dermis, hyaluronic acid helps skin attract and retain moisture."

Niacinamide: Part of the vitamin B complex. It's effective at addressing many skin concerns, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pore-minimizing properties.

Retinol: This can be potentially irritating for some skin types, but there are gentle formulas out there on the market that work for most skin types. Camp says, "It has a proven track record at being an effective anti-aging ingredient. Bakuchiol is a plant-based alternative that may offer similar benefits without being as irritating."
