An Injector, a Derm, and an Aesthetician Agree: These Are the 12 Best Lip Masks on the Market
Soft, smooth, pillowy lips right this way.
I don't care if it's peak summer or the middle of a dark, cold, and blustery winter. I will do everything in my power to avoid dry, chapped lips. They look unfortunate (rough texture, fine lines, peeling… you name it), and they feel uncomfortable. I can't stand that tight, irritated feeling. Lip balm can help, especially if it's used consistently, but I don't want to bet my favorite lip combo on anything other than a lip mask. These heavy-duty formulas not only coat the lips in cushiony moisture to keep them soft, but they also add extra benefits like plumping, smoothing, etc.
I keep a small stockpile of high-performing lip masks in my bedside table (for proof, just keep scrolling!) and apply one every night before I go to sleep. I know I'm not the only beauty editor who does this. It's like an insurance policy. You can apply a lip mask and wake up with a pillowy pout if you use the right one. I have my favorites but wanted to know if there were any other expert-favored formulas I was missing, so I reached out to a trifecta of experts—an injector, an esthetician, and two dermatologists—for their top picks. Ahead, see the 12 best lip masks on the market.

The Best Lip Masks
Best Overall: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
Size: 0.7 oz | Versions: 13 | Key Ingredients: Vitamin C, murumuru-seed butter, shea butter
What can I say about Laneige's Lip Sleeping Mask that hasn't already been said? It's an iconic, original product—the one that put lip masks on our collective radar. The Korean formula is smooth, glossy, and moisturizing with key ingredients like vitamin C, murumuru-seed butter, and shea butter. It's not too heavy, but it's not too light either, striking the perfect textural balance.
With 13 varieties, there's one for every preference. Berry is an OG, but I've branched out to buy the Vanilla, Peach Iced Tea, Pumpkin Pie, and Watermelon Pop varieties. Each one is as good as the next. I choose one to apply every night as part of my bedtime ritual. By morning, my lips are smooth, plump, and moisturized.
I currently keep four Laneige Lip Sleeping Masks on my bedside table.
Best Plumping: Lawless Forget the Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask
Size: 0.28 oz | Versions: Five | Key Ingredients: Shea butter, hyaluronic acid, Maxi-Lip technology
I haveBest Knockoff Luxury Clothing Beauty Director Erin Jahns to thank for introducing me to Lawless's Forget the Filler collection. I love pretty much every product, but the Overnight Lip Plumping Mask is a particular favorite. As a thin-lipped person, I appreciate how the proprietary Maxi-Lip technology is clinically shown to increase lip volume by 40% (yes, really). Meanwhile, shea butter and hyaluronic acid offer deep, reparative hydration.
Best Reparative: Kiehl's Buttermask Intense Repair Lip Treatment
Size: 0.35 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Coconut oil, wild mango butter
If your lips are really damaged and chapped or you want to find the most skin-strengthening and reparative formula out there, well, this is it. Take it from board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, of MDCS Dermatology in NYC: "Formulated with coconut oil and mango butter, this overnight lip mask nourishes lips with intense hydration so that they are soft and supple." It's effective all year round, but in the dry, winter months, it becomes a staple.
Best Exfoliating: Ilia Lip Wrap Overnight Mask
Size: 0.34 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Sea succulent, hyaluronic acid, papaya enzymes
Dry lips are rough lips; it's just the way the world works. If yours have been feeling a little too sandpaper-esque, experts recommend using a gently exfoliating lip mask. The keyword is gently. Products that contain harsh exfoliating crystals or a high percentage of acids can actually make the problem worse by causing irritation and other unwanted effects.
Camp recommends Ilia's Lip Wrap Overnight Mask because it contains papaya enzymes that gently remove dead skin, and sea succulent extract and hyaluronic acid add much-needed moisture.
Best SPF: Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen
Size: 0.35 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Shea butter, vitamin E, vitamin B5, SPF 30
Even though lip masks are most often used at night, they can be used any time you need soothing, softening moisture. (I, for one, swap lip gloss for high-shine lip masks in the cold, dry winter months.) If you're going to be using a lip treatment during the day, why not use one with SPF?
Azadeh Shirazi, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in cosmetic, surgical, and medical dermatology. She recommends a classic—Aquaphor's Lip Protectant + Sunscreen. "This is one of my top recommendations for patients who prefer something fragrance-free and ultra-soothing," she says.
PCA Skin Overnight Lip Mask
Size: 0.46 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Shea butter, coconut oil, vitamin E
Camp also recommends PCA Skin's Overnight Lip Mask, which is a longtime editor favorite. "Squalane, shea butter, vitamin E, and a botanical blend of lipids and fatty acids are featured in this overnight lip mask to hydrate and nourish lips while helping retain moisture," he says.
Fenty Beauty Plush Puddin' Intensive Recovery Lip Mask
Size: 0.5 oz | Versions: Five | Key Ingredients: Coconut oil, castor oil, pomegranate-jojoba complex, pomegranate sterols
Leave it to Rihanna to create a luxe-feeling lip mask that firms, plumps, and moisturizes in one step. Meet Fenty Beauty's Plush Puddin' Intensive Recovery Lip Mask. It has a unique, pudding-like texture that feels so soothing on dry lips. Ingredients such as coconut oil, castor oil, pomegranate, and jojoba oil offer all the aforementioned benefits—the most important being deep, lip-loving moisture. The original version has a light vanilla scent, but there are others to choose from, including Kalahari Melon, Barbados Cherry, Salted Caramel, and Cacao. Each one has a different shade and finish.
Lanolips 12-Hour Overnight Lip Mask
Size: 0.52 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Lanolin, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, ceramides
This lip mask has a rich, buttery consistency that feels so comforting on dry, chapped lips. Infused with lanolin (the brand's star skin-protecting ingredient), it also contains a highly effective mix of active ingredients. "This is one of my favorites because it's a comprehensive formula," Shirazi says. "It's deeply replenishing, formulated with lanolin plus actives like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides."
Tula Skincare 24/7 Moisture Day Night Peptide Lip Mask
Size: 0.28 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, S6Pro Complex
Natia Rufolo is a board-certified aesthetic nurse practitioner, a PDO thread specialist, and the founder of Injx by Nat Aesthetics. She loves Tula's 24/7 Moisture Day Night Peptide Lip Mask because it moisturizes, plumps, soothes, and protects the lips with every application. "It has great ingredients—vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, peptides, prebiotics and probiotics," she says. The fact that it offers a gorgeous glossy finish doesn't hurt either.
Anfisa Skin Ân-Gloss Ceramide Lip Treatment
Size: 0.5 oz | Versions: Three | Key Ingredients: Ceramides, peptides, plant oils
Lexie Bennett is a Milk + Honey licensed aesthetician. She recommends Anfisa Skin's Ân-Gloss Ceramide Lip Treatment. It contains five skin-identical ceramides, two plumping peptides, and a variety of hydrating ingredients to reinforce the skin barrier and keep moisture locked into the lips. It even has a cooling tip, which soothes on contact. "[This] is my number one for lip repair," she says. "It's loaded with ceramides, cholesterol, squalane, plant oils, and peptides. It's elegant and never sticky. I keep one of these in every bag!"
Cosmedix Enhance Lip-Plumping Mask
Size: 0.33 oz | Versions: One | Key Ingredients: Peptides, botanical biopolymer, peppermint
Bennett also recommends Cosmedix's Enhance Lip-Plumping Mask, which she uses in her facial treatments. That's how you know it's really good. As the name implies, it contains a peptide that increases lip volume, and botanical oils provide missing moisture, and a biopolymer creates a flexible shield on the lips. It also has a cooling applicator for an instant soothing effect. "[It's] loaded with peptides and emollients for a little extra plump. It's the perfect finishing touch to any facial treatment," she says.
Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask
Size: 0.32 oz | Versions: Two | Key Ingredients: Japanese peach extract, rose extract, Japanese camellia oil
Last but certainly not least, I have to talk about Tatcha's Kissu Lip Mask. It features an elegant, high-performing formula that makes my dryness-prone lips feel soft, smooth, and luxurious. The secret is in the ingredient list. There's Japanese peach extract to soothe irritation. There's Japanese camellia oil to seal in moisture and provide skin-strengthening omegas. There's even rose extract to smooth any rough texture. There's a reason makeup artists use this during skin prep.
What to Look For
The experts say a lip mask is only as good as the active ingredients that it contains. "When choosing a lip mask, I always tell my patients to prioritize ingredients that nourish, repair, and protect," Shirazi says. "You want to look for hydrating humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin that draw moisture into the lips and emollients such as shea butter, jojoba oil, and ceramides to help lock that hydration in and restore the skin barrier. If your lips tend to get flaky, gentle exfoliating ingredients like enzymes or lactic acid can be beneficial in small amounts, but only if they're balanced with soothing, moisturizing elements. Antioxidants such as vitamin E are also great for shielding lips from environmental stressors."
Rufolo agrees that it's "all about the active ingredients." She says they should do more than just sit on the surface—they should deeply hydrate, repair, and reinforce the natural skin barrier. She adds ceramides, peptides, and vitamin B5 to the list of beneficial ingredients. "Ceramides strengthen the skin barrier, helping to prevent future dryness or cracking. Peptides support collagen production over time, giving the lips a naturally fuller, smoother appearance. Vitamin B5 (panthenol) soothes and repairs, making it ideal for anyone with chapped or sensitive lips," she says.
What to Avoid
The experts say certain ingredients should be avoided, as they could increase the potential for irritation and other adverse effects. "If you have a known skin allergy to fragrances, dyes, or flavoring ingredients, look for products marketed to those with sensitive skin," Camp says. "Know that fragrance-free and unscented are not the same thing; an unscented product may contain a masking fragrance."
Shirazi recommends avoiding irritating ingredients like menthol, phenol, and fragrance, especially if your lips are already sensitive. "These types of ingredients can lead to inflammation and irritation, leaving the lips sore and more vulnerable to environmental factors such as wind, cold, and UV damage," she says. "Similarly, I recommend avoiding lip scrubs. Dry or chapped lips are already in a fragile state, and because the skin on the lips is thin, it takes longer to heal. The abrasive action of scrubs can strip away the natural oils that protect your lips, worsening dryness and even causing micro-tears."
Bennett adds that she recommends skipping lip masks that contain alcohols and high-percentage acids. "I would also avoid 'tingly' ingredients [like menthol and camphor], as these can increase dryness and sensitivity," she says.
How We Chose
Beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock has nearly 10 years of experience assessing Wholesale Replica Bag and greatest beauty products, and she has approached these lip masks with a trained, discerning eye. She reached out to four experts in total: one injector, one esthetician, and two dermatologists for insight. She also collected insights from her colleagues—Who What Wear's expert beauty editors. Finally, she put many of these lip masks to the test, introducing them into her own routine to see if they could really live up to their claims. While creating this list, she made sure to consider a variety of factors, including price, texture, longevity, and moisture levels.
Customer reviews are also important to keep in mind, as everyone has different needs and preferences, so she made sure to scour the review sections of our favorite retailers when compiling this list of the 12 best lip masks.
