Trust Me, I'm a Beauty Director: These Are the 13 Best Volumising Hair Products for Thin Hair

People often get a little bit confused when I harp on about my thin hair. "Your hair isn’t even that thin,” they say. My hair is long, sure, but when my lengths are overdue for a cut, they look scraggly, and my lack of actual strands becomes all too apparent.
However, that’s not to say that my hair is consistently thin all over. At the nape of my neck, I’d say I have an average amount of hair, but as you move your attention toward the crown of my head, you could probably count the individual hairs sprouting out of my scalp by sight. Over the years, I’ve become somewhat self-conscious of the bald(ish) patch where my thin hair parts at the crown of my head and have dedicated a lot of time and money to finding ways to disguise it. I have tried countless different hairstyles for thin hair, asked for volumising hair cuts and tried every product out there. But there is one thing that has made this quest exceptionally difficult: I hate the feeling of volumising product in my hair.
I have found that most volumising hair products add so much unwanted grit, weight and density to my already-drab strands that they actually leave them looking as though they haven’t been washed for approximately three weeks. On top of that, I like my hair to feel clean, fresh and light, like a soft, fluffy extension of my being, and volumising hair products do their very best to dampen that vibe.
However, after years of turning my nose up at virtually every styling product that came my way (especially you, dry shampoo), and after one very special hairstylist showed me the difference the perfect formula could make, I started hunting out the best volumising hair products for thin, fine hair. And I’ve actually found a whole bunch that make my hair look much thicker and more textured than it really is. It’s just about knowing what to look for. Not sure where to start? I've got you.
What Sorts of Volumising Products Are Best?
There's no doubt that volumising sprays are some of the most hardworking products around for thin hair. "My favourite products to use with thin and fine hair are volumising products which are applied via a spray, as they will disperse the product more evenly. I generally tend to use volumising products which focus on the root area, as this is where you will need to create the volume. Additionally, I want to keep the rest of the hair light and avoid the product clumping the hair together. You want all the hairs to be light and separated," says Neale Rodger, Style Director at STIL Salon.
How To Choose the Best Volumising Product
While sprays are very effective, it is absolutely imperative you do some research—as most of them are not specially formulated for this lightweight lift that thin hair requires. "Volumising products often contain polymers such as polyquaternium, PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone), and PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) to coat the hair and make them act like springs. Some formulations also contain alcohol to help evaporate the product and keep it lightweight," Rodger adds. "Fine, light hair should be paired with a fine, lightweight product like a spray or powder. Thicker, heavier hair would work well with a richer formulation like a mousse or cream. I apply this rule to all products, not just volumising products."

1. Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Pre-Shampoo Treatment
Best for: Lightweight bounce
Why it's the best: Although this isn’t sold as a volumising hair mask, I can assure you it adds next-level bounce to my naturally drab lengths. It’s next-level softening and hardworking, for sure, but because it is a pre-shampoo treatment, it doesn't deliver any unwanted weight while it works. The thing I love most about it, though, is the way that it leaves my hair feeling super clean without stripping it of oil and leaving it dry. Truthfully, I can’t be without a tub. Because it helps boost hair's natural elasticity, it also helps prevent breakage (something that only exacerbates the appearance of thinness).
For
- Great for damaged hair
- Every hair type can benefit
Against
- It does add an extra step into your wash routine
2. Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumiser
Best for: A bouncy blow dry at home
Why it's the best: Getting my hair to hold any form of volume from an at-home blow dry has felt virtually impossible in the past, but I've since tried every volumising hot brush under the sun—from £500 options to £30 options. This one comes out on top every time. I love that I can dry my hair and get long-lasting volume in one fell swoop, and it really does help get the sort of lift into my roots that only a salon experience could compete with.
For
- Really affordable
- Quick and easy to use
Against
- Can take a little time to master the perfect look
3. Living Proof Dry Volume Texture Spray
Best for: Long-lasting volume
Why it's the best: This was the first product that really encouraged me to start experimenting with volumising hair products, and I will now never be without a can. Before this, I really didn’t want anything to do with volumising products because I hated the weighty feeling they left behind. This dry spray, however, adds grit and lift to roots while absorbing grease and oil, making any style possible. If I could only keep one hair styling product, it would be this without question. It gives that lived-in, cool, French-girl vibe I'm obsessed with.
For
- Texturises and lifts in one
- Doesn't weigh the hair down
- Creates an effortless, lived-in look
Against
- It's somewhat pricey (but so worth it)
4. Ouai Fine Hair Shampoo
Best for: A weightless, lifted cleanse
Why it's the best: So many volumising products leave build-up on the hair over time, making it feel limp and lifeless. All of Ouai's shampoos are incredible, so you can just select the one for your hair type, but this one adds weightless volume, shine and bounce without any heaviness to fine hair. While thick shampoos and conditioners make styling any volume into my hair near impossible, lightweight formulas like this one make adding lift easy, breezy. I'm yet to find a shampoo my hair loves as much as this one.
For
- Feels super luxe while you use it (and smells great)
- Rinses well for weightless lift
Against
- Won't be suitable for drier hair types, but there are other formulas within the collection
- A luxury price tag
5. JVN Embody Daily Volumizing Conditioner
Best for: Lift, volume, body and hydration
Why it's the best: When you have hair that's lacking in volume, finding the best conditioner for you can feel like an impossible task, particularly if your hair is long and bleached like mine is. This stuff is my Goldilocks conditioner—not too rich, not too light, it's just right. It effectively detangles and softens my lengths while delivering just the right amount of body and bounce, thanks to the inclusion of biotin.
For
- Smells amazing
- Delivers notable fullness
- Rinses well
Against
- Likely won't be conditioning enough for thicker or drier hair types
6. Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Super Lift Root Boost
Best for: Supermodel-esque root lift
Why it's the best: If it's lift that you want, then you need Sam McKnight's Cool Girl Super Lift Root Boost, which delivers weightless volume to limp roots unlike anything else I've ever tried. Sam himself first introduced me to this stuff—he sprayed it into my dry roots while my head was tipped upside-down, massaged it in with his hands and then blow-dried it in. Since then, I've used it whenever I want my hair to look particularly lifted and glam, and my gosh, it really is wondrous. Plus, it smells incredible.
For
- Long-lasting lift
- Frankly unbelievable instant results
Against
- It can be a bit weighty—a little goes a long way
7. Hershesons Zhoosh Foam
Best for: A does-it-all volumiser
Why it's the best: This stuff takes a little getting to used to, but I can assure you it’s worth it in the end. You apply the mousse-like foam onto dry roots and work it in with your fingers. At first, hair will feel wet and sticky, but after a few minutes, the product dries, leaving roots and lengths looking suitably bouncy and refreshed. It does exactly what it says on the tin—zhoosh.
For
- Doesn't leave hair crispy like traditional mousses
- Enhances natural texture
Against
- Don't be tempted to go overboard—too much will weigh your hair down
8. Christophe Robin Cleansing Volumising Paste
Best for: Malleable root lift
Why it's the best: At first, I'll admit, it seems counter-intuitive to use a thick paste to cleanse your hair and add volume, but as soon as you have rinsed out this cleanser, everything makes perfect sense. Roots are left unexpectedly lifted and with added texture. It makes hair more malleable and workable—a quick scrunch of my roots will leave them lifted for hours. Plus, the rose scent is heavenly.
For
- Smells amazing
- Feels luxurious
- A really unique, but effective, approach to volumising
Against
- Not one to use every wash day as it can build up over time
9. Percy Reed Turn Up the Volume Volumising No Oil Oil
Best for: Volumised sleekness
Why it's the best: While it’s rare that I opt for a polished hair look, for days when I want my hair to look sleek and glossy, this is my go-to. It adds shine, sleekness and gloss while also helping boost volume and bounce because of its lighter-than-air texture.
For
- Effortlessly smooths flyaways and frizz
- Beautifully lightweight and buildable
Against
- Drier hair types will need to use more product
10. Olaplex Volumising Blow Dry Mist
Best for: Lifting heat protection
Why it's the best: I'm not sure Olaplex has ever created a dud product, and this stuff is no exception. Thin and fine hair is particularly susceptible to breakage and split ends caused by heat damage, so a great heat protector is really important. The problem? So many of them weigh my thin hair down. This stuff, however, uses high-tech polymers to keep hair protected, sleek and full of bounce—all while delivering a glass-like shine. I'm a loyal customer.
For
- Delivers glass-like hair
- Hair is still left feeling clean after application
Against
- It's more expensive that other heat protection sprays
11. Bumble and Bumble Prét-à-Powder
Best for: A texturising dry shampoo
Why it's the best: I find it’s quite difficult to go overboard with this stuff. If I want serious texture and lift in my roots, I apply it straight from the bottle, whereas if I want to just add some subtle volume through the body of my hair, I puff it into my hands first and run it through the lengths. I’ve used it for years and have no intention of ever giving it up. While other canned dry shampoos deposit way too much product for thin hair, this loose powder is far easier to control.
For
- Great for oily scalps
- A little goes a very long way
Against
- It's a different method to the usual, so takes some getting used to
12. Oribe Hair Alchemy Heatless Styling Balm
Best for: Air drying
Why it's the best: You really don't need a lot of this stuff, but for days when I'm feeling lazy and can't be bother to blow dry my hair, it helps prevent my thin hair from falling flat against my scalp. A smidgin of cream rubbed between the palms of my hands and scrunched into lengths helps texturise and lift. Once dry, hair can feel a little sticky, but the minute you brush it through, that stickiness disappears and you're left with effortlessly cool hair.
For
- Smells great
- Feels really luxurious
- Cuts styling time down
Against
- It's very, very expensive for an air dry cream
13. Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set
Best for: Overnight volume
Why it's the best: If you haven't guessed already, I am not someone who likes to spend time on my hair styling routine—I want fuss-free products that get the job done. When I was serious lift in my hair but can't be bothered with hair multi-stylers, I wrap my hair up in this silk sausage overnight, secure with the included scrunchies and wake up with loose, lifted curls. It's proved revelatory.
For
- Really affordable
- Cuts out morning styling almost entirely
Against
- Results can be a little unpredictable
How Can You Style Your Hair for More Volume?
Now that I've introduced you to the best volumising products for fine hair, I’ve enlisted the help of celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Percy Reed Paul Percival to reveal his top thin-hair tips.
Tip 1. Opt for Lightweight Conditioners
This is possibly the most important thing that I have learned in my pursuit of more voluminous hair. It makes a lot of sense too, right? The thicker the conditioner, the heavier and limper your hair will be. Percival reveals, "You have to make sure that you don’t use a conditioner that’s too heavy for your hair, as it will make achieving great volume more difficult. Avoid products that are too oily, too thick, wax-based or heavy creams that add weight.”
Instead of reaching for thick cream formulas, I’ve discovered that my hair can get its moisture kicks in other ways that allow it to maintain its bounce. My favourite? Oil. Whereas my skin seems to detest everything about oil, my hair can’t get enough of it. "Using natural ingredients such as camellia-seed oil restores moisture and protects. Then macadamia-seed oil penetrates the scalp and hair for strength and elasticity. Finally, vitamin-rich carrot-seed oil works great to rejuvenate and regenerate,” says Percival.
Tip 2. Create Lift
I’d say that lift is just about my biggest bugbear in that my hair doesn’t have any. I can backcomb to my heart’s content, but within minutes, it’s dropped out and my floppy mop is back. To counteract the issue, Percival insists that you need heat, and you need to know what you’re doing. "It’s all about the blow-dry! Make sure you are lifting from your roots in an upright motion as you dry each section, this will give you a great foundation. Finish your blow-dry with a cold blast of air and hair spray.”
So why is it that I feel as though when I give myself a blow-dry, it never seems to last longer than an hour? "It is essential to let each section cool before running your hands or a brush through it so that the style can ‘set.’ Otherwise, you will undo all your good work,” explains Percival.
Tip 3. Find the Right Styling Product
The words styling product are enough to send a chill to the very cores of those with thin locks. For those with thick hair, it seems styling products are more or less foolproof. However, when you’re not working with a lot, fine-tuning your styling routine is a lot easier said than done for fine hair. "Using the right formulation is vital,” says Percival. "Start by using less of the product to begin with. Then add more if your hair needs it. Some volumising products can be heavy, so make sure you pick a lightweight formulation and work it into the root.”
