For yoga classes, a mat is definitely necessary. You want something that's going to have enough grip and has just the right amount of cushioning you prefer so you can flow without worrying about slipping or hurting your joints. And for the most part, you can get by in your yoga workouts with just a mat—that's one of the beauties of the exercise, it's fairly accessible since you don't need a ton of gear.

But if you really want to take your yoga sessions to the next level, a yoga block (or a pair of them) can really make a difference. You can use them to help with balance and stability, perfect your form, and help you get deeper into poses if you want to.
