5 Trends From Burberry We'll See Everywhere in 2020
We’re in the thick of London Fashion Week, and so far we've had the pleasure of viewing Victoria Beckham, Simone Rocha, Rejina Pyo, and more. Today, we’ll be seeing Burberry, which is one of the most talked-about shows of LFW with Riccardo Tisci at the helm of the brand. This year, the fashion house will be holding its show at Troubadour White City Theatre and sent invites constructed from delicate lace, which offer some clues about what we’ll be seeing in just a few hours.
If you want to watch the runway show as it happens, you’ll be able to watch a live stream in the YouTube video below at 12 p.m. ET. Come back here for our review of the runway show with a breakdown of the most important moments and trends to know about from Burberry S/S 20.
The three-piece suit will take over next spring.
Suiting continues to evolve season after season. At Burberry, Tisci ushered in sharply tailored three-piece suits with a jacket, trousers, and a buttoned vest layered underneath. The vest—worn on its own under a jacket or with a shirt underneath—isn't a piece most designers are including in their pantsuits right now, but it feels like a fresh take on refined suiting that will no doubt replace this season’s oversize take on the trend.
Tonal looks will continue to be an important trend.
Soft, tonal looks in shades of gray, beige, and powder blue dominated the show. Tisci offers up a range of ways to pull it off: powerful suiting, corset-inspired looks, ruffled skirts paired with utility jackets, relaxed knits. Both on the runways and the street style scene, we’ve seen tonal outfits for several seasons now, but this is proof that they are showing no signs of letting up.
Meet the new It hat.
Tisci noted that when designing the collection, titled Evolution, he looked back to the time when the brand was founded, in the Victorian era. "This is a collection inspired by our past and dedicated to our future,” he explained. "It’s the evolution of our Burberry kingdom.” His references to the past are evident in the sculptural hats he sent down the runway: a hybrid of a Victorian bonnet and a baseball hat that is destined for It-accessory status next spring.
Fringe was set on repeat.
Tassel fringe was a design element that was on repeat on the runway, adorning everything from the ends of sleeves and the bottoms of skirts to the hemlines on dresses and edges of scarf-print tops.
Sleek, middle-parted hair is back.
The collection felt like a return to Tisci’s Italian roots in many ways, including the beauty look. Models were styled by Guido Palau with simple but sophisticated hair, worn shiny and straight with a middle part and tucked behind the ears. While the models walked down the runway, their hairstyles immediately conjured images polished Italian women.
