5 Things I Would Never Wear to the Airport During Summer

Looking cute at the airport is a difficult task, we know, but looking cute at the airport in the summer? Forget about it. Just kidding—don't forget about it; that's what I'm here for. I'm not one of those people who dress to the nines while on an airplane, but I'm also not one of those people who wear pajamas. I guess you could say I'm right in the middle, which is a pretty good place to be. I can honestly say I've made some horrible airport outfit mistakes over the years, and the ones that stick out to me the most are by far my summer airport outfit mistakes. 

To ensure you never experience the misery I have while on a plane due to a faulty wardrobe choice, I've listed the five items I'll never wear to the airport during the summer, in addition to the pieces I'll be wearing instead. Again, these are all things I have worn in the past, but let me tell you, I will never make that mistake again. Never: Sandals

Always: Closed-Toe Slip-On Shoes

I don't care how hot it is outside—I will never wear sandals to the airport. Some people don't get freaked out by having to walk barefoot around the security line, but I am just not one of those people. Despite the fact that the obvious summer footwear choice that is sandals, I will always wear a closed-toe (and preferably slip-on) shoe to the airport, like Vans or simple boots.

Never: Spaghetti Strap Tank Top

Always: T-Shirt

If you can go braless and feel great doing it, more power to you, but traveling sans bra—or even worse—in a strapless bra is a huge no in my book. Comfort is key, even if your flight isn't a gruesome one, which is why I always opt for a classic T-shirt. This way I can wear whichever underpinnings make me most comfortable, and I'm staying cool in the heat. 

Never: Tight Rigid Denim

Always: Wide-Leg Pants or Leggings

No lie—one time I wore my favorite pair of vintage Levi jeans on a flight, and I have never been so miserable. On a regular day when I'm not seating in a confined space for multiple hours, those jeans are the loves of my life, but on a plane, the rigid denim constricted me, leaving me extremely uncomfortable. Leggings are an obvious alternate here, but in case you don't actually consider those pants, try wide-leg jeans or trousers instead. 

Never: Shorts

Always: Midi Dress

You might have noticed by now, but I'm extremely particular. One of my pet peeves on a flight is having my legs touching the seat. In other words, shorts are a huge no. A great alternative to shorts in the summertime is a midi dress. Make sure the dress is comfortable around your arms and midsection, but for the most part, midi dresses are great to travel in. Your legs won't touch the seat, and they're probably more comfortable then a pair of pants. 

Never: Linen

Always: Cotton

Linen is the summer fabric everyone swears by, but if you're a fan, you know it wrinkles like no other. While you might look sharp boarding the plane, you might not look as tidy leaving it. Instead of worrying about wrinkles and creases, always reach for cotton pieces—think T-shirts, lightweight sweatpants, or pretty blouses.
