All My Favourite Summer Trousers Have This One Simple Feature In Common

We’re all searching for that elusive outfit combination that ticks off comfortable and polished, aren’t we? I think ideally we’d all like to feel like we were wearing a tracksuit most of the time, while looking like we didn’t even know what one was. And in summer it becomes even harder to achieve both comfort and polish at once since the heat often has other ideas.

This year, though, I’ve been determined to crack the code, experimenting with various outfit formulas and taking mental notes every time I see my fellow editors looking effortlessly chic on summer days. From my research, I’ve come to the conclusion that there seems to be one common denominator across all my favourite warm-weather outfits right now— and that’s drawstring wide-leg trousers. I’m guessing you’re probably already familiar with the joys of a baggy pant by now— we have been raving about this celeb and influencer-loved trend all autumn/winter— but the seasonal update of a tied waist not only makes this smart trouser feel easy, breezy and generally more relaxed for summer, it also makes them even more comfortable. Tick, tick, tick.

Drawstring trousers are comfy but polished.

Most drawstring trousers on the market right now come in airy linen fabrics (ch-ic)— in particular, there’s a pretty darn-near-perfect pair of Arket trousers I plan on investing in in multiple colours because I already know how much I’ll wear them. Oh, and I’ll take the matching shirt too while I’m at it. The holy grail of drawstring trousers, though, has to be The Row’s Dandy silk-blend canvas style which couldn’t possibly encapsulate polished comfort any better. Fret not, there’s also a budget-friendly satin pair from H&M which do a similar job of feeling a bit smarter.

I'm wearing the H&M satin pair here on a recent trip to France.

Whichever version you opt for, I can guarantee they’ll help you to look put-together this summer— whether you’re on the beach with bare feet, sightseeing in Europe or heading into the office during a heatwave. All they need is a simple vest top, and maybe a button down layer thrown over and you’ve got yourself the perfect summer outfit. Keep scrolling to shop my favourite pairs…
