I'm Gutting My Closet and Saying Goodbye to These Basics (But I'm Adding These)
Every January, I have the motivation to tackle my closet. I have specifically been taking inventory of my collection of basics to see what's in dire need of an update. Stylish basics, in fact, are what my wardrobe primarily consists of, so they are always top of mind. Not only do these pieces tend to be comfortable and easy to mix and match, but they also have a timeless quality. Even so, it's time to store (or even sell and donate) some of the old staples and make room for fresh additions.
For this good old-fashioned closet clean-out, I am focusing on incorporating new basics that feel more modern and elevate my everyday looks. Think of it as an update for everything from simple socks to stylish sweaterdresses (the slouchier the fit, the better), classic outerwear, and more. Ahead, check out five basics that have served me well in the past and what I am swapping them out for this season.
Store: No-Show Socks
Swap For: Crew Socks
Lately, I can't help but feel that showing my socks looks better when it comes to wearing sneakers and clogs. I 100% blame it on the resurgence of Princess Diana inspired style.
Store: Midi Skirts
Swap For: Ankle-Length Skirts
There is something so chic about longer skirts that hit right at the ankle. The style gives me '90s-minimalist vibes that bring Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy to mind.
Store: Fitted Sweaterdresses
Swap For: Oversize Sweaterdresses
I'm already in love with oversize sweaters, so it's only natural to take it to the next level. The slouchy fit has a cooler, more grounded feel.
Store: High-Waist Leggings
Swap For: Legging Jumpsuits
I have been living in high-waisted leggings for years now during my off-duty moments. Now, I'm taking it one step further with a legging jumpsuit. The ease in dressing it provides is unmatched.
Store: Classic Trench Coats
Swap For: Boxy Trench Coats
I will always love a classic trench coat, but right now, a boxy option is at the top of my list. The minimalist style takes me back to Phoebe Philo's incredibly chic tenure at Celine.
