3 Style Mistakes I Make Every Fall—and How I'm Going to Fix Them
We’re one month out from the start of fall, but as always, the fashion set has basically already forgotten about summer and instead turned their attention to the most stylish season of the year. Of course, I'm guilty of this as well: In recent weeks, I've written about my favorite fall trends, the best boots, and even the highly specific outfits I want to wear once the temperatures drop—all while temps here in NYC are still in the 80s and 90s.
The subject of today's decidedly fall-related post? The style mistakes I tend to make every time the season rolls around. There are probably a handful, but today I’m pinpointing three top mistakes I have a feeling many of you can relate to. After all, I can’t be the only one right? To read about the three things I do wrong (from a fashion standpoint, at least) every time the leaves change—and how I plan to fix them—just keep scrolling.
1. Wearing too much black
This one stings a bit because I really love wearing black—but while there are certainly days for keeping it simple, it doesn't have to be your entire fall M.O. After all, how cool does the woman below look in shades of blue, cream, and brown? To combat my tendency to go colorless from head-to-toe, I'm plotting a two-pronged approach this fall. Aside from the obvious solution of buying more colorful pieces, I have to make sure I actually wear them. I plan on using this easy trick to ensure that when I get ready in the morning, I keep things colorful.
My inspo:
Shop pieces that aren't black:
2. Going for the boring boots
As someone who wears boots pretty much daily once fall arrives, I'm guilty of buying countless pairs that are pretty great and pretty simple (code for "boring" for some of you). This season, however, I've resolved to step up my boot game and instead opt for some of the season's more exciting options.
My inspo:
Shop non-boring boots:
3. Lazy layering
What qualifies as lazy layering? Well, things like always sticking to one easy color scheme, only opting for no-brainer basics, and simply not thinking outside the box. While I tend to start off strong at the beginning of the season, as soon as we're a few weeks into fall, I'm guilty of giving in to all of the above. This season, things are going to be different: Not only will I be investing in more exciting layering essentials, but I'll be using street style inspiration heavily to inform my outfit ideas. For starters, I love how the woman below styled an of-the-moment racer tank under her utility jumpsuit.
My inspo:
Shop interesting layering pieces:
Up next? The fall trend I'm actually willing to put aside my jeans for.

Currently, she focuses on a weekly mélange of shopping content and her Trust Me—Buy This newsletter. As far as her personal style goes, she's largely drawn to neutral, classic pieces but will always make an exception for something colorful or bejeweled as long as it's deemed worthy enough. After all, the only thing she loves more than a party is dressing up for one. On her downtime, she can usually be found at home eating something delicious and trying to force her husband to watch Summer House.
