Tough Luck, White Trainers—This Is the Chic Neutral Colour Fashion People Are Wearing Now

When it comes to trainers, I like to keep my collection minimal and functional. Favouring styles in a versatile colour palette, I look for items that feel like they could have always belonged in my wardrobe. Of course, white trainers are always an option, especially if going with everything is a key consideration, but am I the only one that thinks that, sometimes, they can look a little too white set against certain outfits? Even after weeks or months of wear, they can stand out in a way you might not want them too. This is the reason I think we're seeing a sudden influx of grey trainers right now.
When I'm trying to get a handle on the new-season trends, I tend to first look at a small group of celebrities. Those who reside at the epicentre of fashion circles—whose closest friends include designers, stylists and tastemakers that seem to be able to recognise a new-season trend ahead of the rest of us. Actor Laura Harrier is undoubtedly one of these people, and she's just one of the many, many people who have embraced the grey trainer trend recently.
Styling a pair of New Balance Made in USA 990v4 Trainers in a light grey hue, Harrier tapped into the trainer colour that I had already clocked on London's streets.
Widely considered a neutral, grey is an easy colour to integrate into your wardrobe, and we've seen this done so by way of coats, jeans and knitwear this season already. However, it makes just as compelling a shade for trainers, too. Just as versatile as white, I'd actually go as far as to say it's even more so, as its knocked-back tone tends to blend with other hues more seamlessly than its stark counterpart.
Also able to withstand a little bit of dust or dirt better than white pairs, the recent popularity of grey kicks tells me it is set to take off as the new neutral trainer that stylish people will want to wear well into spring. While I would never go so far as to suggest that white trainers are "out", grey trainers are feeling more tempting by the day.
