If You Wear This Simple Outfit Formula Come Fall, I'll Know You Have Taste
We often talk about European style because individuals in France, Stockholm, London, and other major cities continuously set high fashion standards and are always one step ahead. They inspire us to study their outfits to see what classics and trends they're leaning into so that we can follow their lead and incorporate them into our wardrobes.
While researching upcoming fall trends and admiring some of these European fashion people, one noticeable styling choice stood out: the strategic use of belts worn over shirts. This captured my attention because it's another layering moment I've spotted recently and because of the way it was styled—particularly Sylvie Mus's sophisticated pairing of a long sweater with a midi skirt, Hanna Johansson's luxe slip-skirt ensemble, and Caroline Lin's stunning monochromatic trench-coat outfit.
You might be reminded of the "unnecessary belt" trend from the 2000s that was popularized by celebrities like Ashley Tisdale, Paris Hilton, and Sienna Miller. However, the current interpretation of belted styling is distinct and refined. Instead of the chunky braided belts and Western-inspired disc belts layered over ribbed tank tops, the current trend calls for more sophisticated and tasteful iterations. Think thin to medium-width leather belts in classic tones like black and ivory elegantly worn with sheer tanks and fine-knit sweaters.
This resurgence shouldn't be a surprise, especially considering the recent fall 2024 presentations, where designers unequivocally stated that belts are back in full force. Designs ranged from double-belted tops, as seen at JW Anderson, to wide belts cinching button-down shirts and skirts at Ferragamo. The looks demonstrated the runway's keen fascination with the aesthetically pleasing, albeit sometimes unnecessary, belts.
Given the ahead-of-the-curve nature of European fashion, the belt-over-shirt outfit formula is poised to be one of the defining trends of 2024 and 2025. With that, scroll down to discover how some of Europe's chicest style mavens use the trend to elevate their looks and shop the key pieces needed to re-create this sophisticated aesthetic.
Sylvie Mus doesn't usually follow fashion trends, but if she does, she tastefully incorporates them into her style, as seen here. She used a simple gray turtleneck sweater and an ivory denim skirt as her base. Then, she paired the look with a sleek belt that complemented the heels nicely and introduced one element of color with the red east-west bag, drawing attention to a single focal point.

Caroline Lin proved that a trend can look supremely elegant when styled thoughtfully. The secret to her look was a monochromatic ivory ensemble. The long trench coat, textured sheer top, and silk pants alone could have made her look put-together, but the matching belt lying low on her shirt lent a distinguished aesthetic.

Hanna Johansson's minimalistic belt-over-shirt outfit looked exceptionally polished despite being made up of wardrobe basics. She paired a slip skirt with a white tank top and added a contrasting belt to break up the look. This example perfectly illustrates how uncomplicated and effortless the chic trend can be.

If you're someone who loves experimenting with new styles, I recommend drawing inspiration from Anne Johannsen. Try out a wallet belt (not a belt bag) and pair it with a romantic, collarless button-down shirt and a textured skirt. This outfit is bold and unconventional, and it's practical and guaranteed to make a striking statement, leaving you feeling confident and stylish.

Just because this belt is simple and affordable doesn't mean it's boring.
Since Prada's F/W 23 runway show, gray sweaters with classic crewneck cuts and hems that fall right below the hip have been everywhere. Grab an affordable option from H&M and pair it with a belt, a full-length voluminous skirt, and pumps.
Style with a silk camisole, a matching midi slip skirt, and Western-inspired boots.
This sweater is ideal for accessorizing with a belt due to its longer hemline, which falls below the hips, and its lightweight material, which prevents the belt from creating bulk.
I walked into a Khaite store over the weekend and saw this belt, the one that fashion people have been drooling over recently. Now, I understand why. It's so luxurious that it's guaranteed to give any outfit an instant rich-looking feel.
The thin fabric, high neck, relaxed shoulders, and billowy sleeves give this top an effortless look.
This is a great example of a stylish wallet belt that would elevate a simple tank top and skirt.
The hidden button placket on this top makes it the perfect piece for styling with a belt.
Leopard print is expected to be a major trend this fall, so it's likely that we'll start seeing it featured on a lot of belts.
