Love Them or Hate Them, Baggy Jeans Are Here to Stay—These are the 7 Styles Worth Investing in This Winter
From the outcasts of the '80s to the minimalists of now, baggy jeans are trending once again. Scroll to find out and discover the 7 best, editor approved styles.
Riddle me this: what do style icon Rihanna, ’90s Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and multi-grammy award winner Billie Eilish all have in common? For me, they’re all synonymous with one jean style which refuses to fade: the best baggy jeans.
At times, it feels like fashion trends come and go faster than viral TikTok sounds, but baggy jeans have proven that they're more than just a nostalgic nod to the past, and something that’s here to stay. Once tied to ‘80s hip hop, grunge and skate culture, in the past few years, these loose-legged silhouettes have transitioned from something relatively niche to one of the biggest denim trends of the year, chosen over classic cuts by Gen-Zers and millennials alike. According to Stylight—a trend report focused on Y2K fashion on TikTok—cites an increase in search volume for baggy jeans by 170% in 2021, and the lust for the loose has only grown tenfold since then.
Fast forward to 2025, and baggy jeans have evolved from low-rise Carhartt iterations and frayed hem thong-baring styles to ones that are far more polished and classic in shape. With a new look, they’ve been opened up to a whole new crowd, one that favours minimalism and clean lines. No wonder searches for baggy jeans have skyrocketed on Google, up +600% this month alone.
What are baggy jeans?
Characterised by their relaxed, looser-cut shape, baggy jeans are defined by a distinctive wide leg which drapes with ease from hip to ankle in an oversized fashion. Typically sitting at a mid-rise or low-rise fashion around your waist, they share much of the same colour and wash variety as your favourite jeans—it's the silhouette which sets them apart. There are a number of popular jeans styles which fall into the baggy jeans family. Think of the balloon-barreled silhouette, which dominated the fashion set this spring, or technical carpenter-inspired styles, which are making a strong comeback this winter.
To put them to the test, I tried hundreds of the best baggy jean silhouettes on the market right now. These seven pairs, I think, are worth investing in this winter. Scroll to discover more.

Why are Baggy Jeans Trending?
Now, it could be said the cry for the best baggy jeans is due to the ‘90s nostalgia gripping the fashion set as of late. However, I’ve found the appeal runs deeper than that. There distinct wide leg finish and low hanging waist, baggy jeans are a quite rebellion against the high-waisted skinnies, once championed by Kate Moss and Topshop devotees in the 2010s. They embody a collective desire for comfort, polish, and effortless sensibility when we dress. Whether you’re channelling the monastic minimalism of the Olsen twins or a refined polish which feels oh-so JLo, baggy jeans just work. Their voluminous silhouette serves as the ultimate foundation, easily elevated with a heel or finished with a boot.
What to Look for in One of the best baggy jeans?
When deciphering what to look for in the best baggy jeans, the composition and fit are imperative. A style traditionally made out of cotton, the style is suited to all climates. If in a cooler climate, opt for a thicker denim as base layers can be layered underneath with ease. In a warmer, look for softer cotton fabric or linen blends as they’ll keep you cool as well as covered. Naturally, you have to consider which baggy jeans silhouette will work for you. If you’re taller, floor-grazing silhouettes like COS’s Volume Wide Leg jeans and Carhartt W’ Brandon Pant might be better suited, whereas if you’re shorter, Paige’s Sasha might be your perfect fit.
What to Wear With baggy jeans?
Working well with the rest of your capsule wardrobe, you can pair baggy jeans with just about anything! Providing your outfit with a laid back ease, I love styling mine with everything from a tailored black coat and cosy cashmere knits to a floaty trench and pastel pink jumper. Lean into your winter capsule wardrobe staples with this denim silhouette as just about everything and anything goes.
