We Tried 9 Pieces From This Editor-Favorite Retailer, and They're So Good

Every fashion editor has a preferred sartorial season. For some, there’s nothing more thrilling than taking a much-needed mental vacation via an especially vibrant resort collection, and others are more into the time-honored fall and winter tradition of artfully piling on cozy layer after cozy layer.
Who What Wear editor Jasmine Fox-Suliaman falls decidedly into this latter camp, viewing dressing for winter in New York City as a complex but satisfying challenge to solve. "My approach to winter fashion is all about finding the balance between functionality and frivolity,” she explains. "Anything I wear this time of year must be not only fun but also functional enough to wear in NYC’s unpredictable weather. I love investing in classic pieces with a twist, such as outerwear with faux-shearling lapels.” She’s found that one retailer in particular puts out pieces that check both boxes: Free People. Below, she’s put together a pair of looks featuring her favorite pieces from the retailer that are sure to get you through anything and everything the holidays have in store.
"It’s not exactly easy to dress for winter in NYC because the weather is as unpredictable as the city itself. You want layers you can take off or add on—hence my attraction to this shearling peacoat,” Jasmine says of this look. "What I love about this coat is that it’s the type of piece you could own for years to come, yet it taps into the fuzzy fold-over collar trend we saw all over the fall 2022 runways.”
"Since the coat is such a statement piece, I wanted to keep the rest of the styling simple,” she notes. "I added a simple black turtleneck and then finished off the look with a trendy pair of relaxed jeans and platform ankle boots. This is the perfect look for a cold winter day in the city. It can be thrown on easily and worn to just about anything.”
"I’m all about balance, so for my second look, I mixed more trend-forward pieces with staples,” Jasmine explains. "The neckline of this Intimately top is so flattering, and it can be styled so many ways. It’s definitely an everyday piece, but here, I dressed it up with two key of-the-moment pieces: a denim skirt and a colorful leather coat.”
"Pairing this olive-green vegan-leather coat with the maxi skirt ended up being the winter outfit I didn’t even know I was missing in my life (until now),” she adds. "To finish off the look, I picked a neutral sling bag and knee-high boots. For me, it doesn’t get more ‘winter in New York’ than this outfit.”
