I've Noticed These 6 Winter Makeup Trends Are Already Taking Over
With a new season upon us, it's only natural that we want to know what the top winter makeup trends of 2022 will be. The shift from autumn makeup to winter brings a new lease of life to our makeup bags, as we switch up our makeup formulas to suit the season (read: freezing cold-weather calls for hydrating formulas) as well as give a new lease of life to our makeup bags (sparkling eye makeup for the party season, perhaps?).
Traditionally, beauty trends have filtered through from the runways and into our makeup bags. Nowadays, however, there are so many places of influence on what makeup we decide to wear each day. There's no denying the influence of TikTok, where new trends and techniques emerge every day. Then, you have the insight of celebrity makeup artists who are ahead of the curve on what trending makeup will be the next big thing. And of course, we've always got one eye on what celebrities and influencers are wearing when we scroll through our social media feeds. Plus, the popular beauty products that we ourselves purchase also shape the makeup landscape.
With those in mind, I decided to deep dive into the trending makeup looks that will shape the winter season, with plenty of inspiration imagery and products to re-create the looks.
1. Winter Luminosity
"In order to avoid skin looking dehydrated or fatigued due to the colder months, reaching for products that provide luminous skin with optimum comfort and glow will be your winter skin survival kit," says award-winning makeup artist, Aarti P. "Cream bronzers, blushers and highlighters will give skin much-required warmth, colour and radiance whilst wearing a lightweight base that even outs skin tone will be desirable," she adds.
As for lips and cheeks, you can bring a glow to these areas too to tie your look together. "Two-in-one blush and lip products are perfect to quickly blend colour onto the face and achieve skin that really pops," says Aarti.
The satin textures of Hailey Bieber's makeup lend a luminous glow to her complexion.

2. "Cold Girl" Blush

As a way of tapping into the chill of the season, makeup artist Zoe Kim Kenealy is bringing "cold girl" blusher into the mainstream. Much like how in summer we saw the rise of sun-kissed blush (applied across the nose and cheeks), winter's take is this "flushed from a cold walk" blusher which has a matte finish. And it's surprisingly wearable if you like a natural makeup look.
In the video, we see Kenealy use powder to mattify her skin before applying two tones of blusher. "Getting rid of any glow, we want a perfectly matte blurred base, and now I'm going in with these pink and orange blushes," she says, sweeping over her cheeks and nose to re-create a flushed look.
A cosy, oversized knit and some blusher are all you need to tap into this trend.
This trend is all about the blusher placement, so try bringing your blush further in on your cheek before diffusing outwards for a pretty pop of colour.
Two-tone blush will help you re-create the look. For darker skin tones, try plum and deep pinks.

High pigment with a soft and buildable finish, everyone should own at least one Beauty Pie blusher.
You've probably seen this blusher all over TikTok, and it's just as great as its hype suggests.
Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta is well-known for his blusher looks, and the formulas in his makeup line are unrivalled.
3. Lip Oil
It's perhaps no surprise that lip oils are continuing to be popular as we head into winter. According to shopping data from Klarna, lip oil purchases have increased by 32%, with many lip oils from Clarins and Dior taking off on TikTok. Not only are they low-key and wearable, but these hydrating formulas are also perfect for shielding lips from the chill during winter. Plus, they're generally longer-lasting than lip balms—win-win.
Lip oils are great for an off-duty yet pulled-together makeup look.

Hourglass's lip treatment oils come in a range of beautiful tints to give lips a hint of colour while conditioning.
4. Emerald Eyes
If there is one eye shadow colour that I'm seeing on every celebrity makeup artist's Instagram right now, it's emerald green. From molten metallic finishes to glimmering glitter, it's the party season trend that will have everyone green with envy.

5. Bronze Eyes
Warm-toned browns and bronzes are back in a big way for winter and have been seen on countless celebrities. "Lashings of mascara and bronzy eyelids will take you look from day to party this season, and velvety lip products will add further comfort yet provide that punch of colour to really make an impression," says Aarti, as shown on Martha Hunt.

6. Brown Lipstick
There is a brown lipstick to suit every skin tone, and for winter, we're seeing more satin and gloss finishes cropping up on our social media feeds, like this satin-brown shade on Simone Ashley.
Chestnut brown lipliner perfectly enhances Rihanna's lips, as seen at the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiere.
If you find brown to harsh on your skin tone, a twist of red can make it more wearable.
