My Makeup Never Lasted Until I Added This One Product to My Routine, and Wow: It's Game-Changing
If your foundation fades, creases or melts away, you’re not alone. These standout primers are the secret to smoother application and longer wear.
I have a confession to make. I used to really, really dislike makeup primers. I'm all for optimising the longevity of my makeup, but honestly? So many makeup primers I've tried over the years have been a flop. In my experience, they often feel heavy on the skin, and whilst some of the thicker ones give good results, the trade-off is that they clog my skin for days on end. And at best? Some primers don't do anything at all for me. Before beginning my career as a beauty journalist, I felt a bit clueless about which makeup primers were best for oily skin like mine, or which illuminating primers were really worth the money.
Beauty editor Eleanor Vousden swears by E.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer and Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer.
Thankfully, primer formulas have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and I've since been converted. So much so, I now can't imagine doing my makeup without one. Primers are akin to prepping a canvas or a wall for paint. Depending on the formula, they can smooth over pores and fine lines, hydrate parched complexions (hello, best primers for dry skin), or add a touch of radiance underneath your foundation for a lit-from-within kind of glow. They also work to "grip" makeup, helping it last longer throughout the day.
So, now that I can confidently recommend my favourites, scroll ahead to find out which ones made it onto mine and some of the team's list of the best primers of all time. I'm seriously fussy, so I can guarantee these really are worth trying.
The Best Makeup Primers
- Best Overall Primer: E.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer, £11
- Best Long-Wearing Primer: Urban Decay All Nighter Face Primer, £29
- Best Blurring Primer: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, £24
- Best Brightening Primer: Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer, £16
- Best Hydrating Primer: Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, £18
1. E.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer
This might be my favourite primer on this list, and it just so happens to be a friend of my bank account, too. The gel texture melts into the skin, creating a slickly tacky (but in no way sticky) base that acts like velcro for anything you put on top. It's also very hydrating and lightweight, making it great for those with dry or oily skin alike. I'll never be without a tube of this in my makeup bag.
Pros
- Hydrating
- Makes foundation last longer
- Affordable
Cons
- Often sold out
2. Urban Decay All Nighter Face Primer
Urban Decay is well known for its setting spray, but this primer works at the other end of the spectrum to help your makeup to last longer. Silky and featherlight, it's ideal for all skin types, and really will lock your makeup in place all day long.
Pros
- Non-greasy
- Long-lasting
Cons
- Slightly more expensive than others
3. Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer
I was floored the first time I tried this primer—it really does live up to the hype. It has a silky, liquid texture that dries down into a velvety-soft finish that blurs pores. It also makes your foundation look amazing and last much longer.
Pros
- Blurs pores
- Lightweight
- Velvety finish
Cons
- More expensive than most
4. Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer
This has been recommended to me numerous times for its hydrating formula and dewy finish; it's like a big glass of water for skin that is dry or prone to dehydration.
Pros
- Hydrating
- Dewy finish
- Illuminates dull complexions
Cons
- Might not be suitable for blemish-prone skin
5. Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer
Everyone loves this primer, and so do I. It has an ultra-hydrating gel formula that acts like superglue for your makeup. You need to wait a few moments for it to set on the skin before following with your base products, but it really does boost your makeup to last for hours on end. Packed with hydrating ingredients, it quenches skin without making it oily—it's just right.
Pros
- Hydrating
- Makeup lasts for longer
Cons
- Have to wait a little while after applying before doing your makeup
6. Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base
Whilst technically a moisturiser, this has been a priming hero for years. It blends the benefits of a nourishing and lightweight moisturiser with those of a primer, streamlining your makeup application. So many makeup artists swear by it for long-lasting makeup for brides, and it even helps to stop foundation from oxidising and changing colour. Put simply, it's iconic for a reason.
Pros
- Moisturiser and primer in one
- Hydrating
- Great prep for makeup
Cons
- Bulky packaging
7. Rare Beauty Always An Optimist Illuminating Primer
Want to give your skin a healthy glow? Rare Beauty has you covered with this one. The water-based formula glides onto skin, leaving behind a pearlescent glow that looks beautiful both worn alone or to give a gorgeous radiance underneath foundation.
Pros
- Illuminates skin
- Lightweight formula
Cons
- Shimmer can cling to dry patches so might not be suitable for dry skin types
8. Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter
I don't know anyone who doesn't instantly fall in love with this product when they try it. It's one of those hybrid beauty products that acts as both a primer and a highlighter, or can be mixed with other products for a radiance boost. There is zero glitter in this; instead, it lends skin a pearlescent halo of light. I love wearing it on its own, but if you want to give your foundation extra glow and dewiness, you'd do well to try this under makeup.
Pros
- Illuminating
- Can be used as a primer, base makeup or highlighter
Cons
- More expensive than most
9. Embroylisse Lait-Cremè Concentré
I see this backstage at Fashion Week every single season without fail. The truth is that makeup artists love this moisturiser for makeup prep because it works for every skin type and sinks in fast on models' skin. The moisturising formula melts into a milky consistency that absorbs instantly, leaving skin plumped and refreshed. It's a French-pharmacy staple for a reason.
Pros
- Affordable
- Hydrating
Cons
- Might not be suitable for very oily skin
10. Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Drops
You'll have no doubt heard about these if you haven't already been swept up in the TikTok hype around them. If you want to add warmth to your skin or foundation, these are a great way to add a sun-kissed look. A few drops go a long way to lend the skin a healthy, bronzed and radiant result.
Pros
- Adds a healthy bronze glow
Cons
- May be too dark for very fair skin
11. Laura Mercier Pure Canvas Primer Illuminating
Laura Mercier is world-renowned for its makeup primers (you'll often spot them in makeup artists' kits), and this one is brilliant for adding radiance to lacklustre complexions. It smooths over the skin with a buttery finish that also lends a big dose of instant radiance.
Pros
- Illuminating
- Smoothing
Cons
- Might not be suitable for very oily skin
12. Glow Recipe Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Blur Drops
If oiliness or pores are concerns that you want to address, then you'll love Glow Recipe's offering. Featuring beta-hydroxy acids, it helps to unclog pores and balance oil production whilst giving a mattifying, soft-focus finish. The lightweight texture doesn't clog pores, and it can even be used over makeup to absorb some oiliness throughout the day.
Pros
- Mattifying
- Blurs pores
- Great for combination, acne-prone or oily skin types
Cons
- May be too matte for dry skin types
13. Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas Primer
Want a liquid formula that gives a velvety-soft, blurred finish? Tatcha's is incredible. It smooths over uneven skin texture, fine lines and pores, helping to create a uniform canvas for makeup application, and really does help foundation wear beautifully throughout the day.
Pros
- Blurs pores and fine lines
- Boosts makeup longevity
Cons
- More expensive than most
14. Refy Face Primer, Glow and Sculpt
Refy's innovative primer allows you to prime and massage the skin simultaneously, making it great for de-puffing and sculpting as you prep for makeup application.
Pros
- Massage head helps to sculpt and de-puff
- Lightweight formula
Cons
- May not be hydrating enough for dry skin
15. E.l.f. Cosmetics Poreless Putty Primer
I firmly believe that E.l.f. Cosmetics deserves a second mention on this list for its Poreless Putty Primer. Whilst the Power Grip Primer is more hydrating, this one is mattifying and blurs pores and uneven skin texture amazingly well. And for £11, this pot will last you for ages too, making it a steal.
Pros
- Affordable
- Blurs pores
- Mattifies
Cons
- May clog pores if not removed properly
16. bareMinerals Prime Time Original Pore-Minimising Primer
I've been road-testing this primer over the past week, and I'm really impressed with how well it blurs the pores around my nose, without feeling thick and gloopy like some pore-blurring primers. It helps to control oiliness throughout the day and even helps to improve the appearance of pores over time as you wear it.
Pros
- Blurs pores
- Controls oiliness and shine
Cons
- More expensive than most
17. Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Face Primer
Craving a brighter, more even-toned complexion? Try this. Based on the iconic Banana Bright Eye Cream, this helps to address dull skin with colour-correcting pigments, all whilst boosting the wear of your makeup throughout the day.
Pros
- Illuminating and brightening
- Has skincare benefits
Cons
- Might not be hydrating enough for very dry skin
18. NYX Professional Makeup Smoothing Marshmallow Root Infused Super Face Primer
I was enticed by the name, but I stayed for the formula. This one has a plumping effect on the skin, whilst it also smooths over pores and grips makeup really well.
Pros
- Blurs pores
- Plumping effect
Cons
- Has a marshmallow fragrance
19. Saie Glowy Super Gel
I often keep Saie's Glowy Super Gel on standby for days when my skin needs extra oomph. It has the most beautiful sheen that lends skin a healthy radiance, and I also love to add a couple of pumps to my arms and shins when they're looking lacklustre. A little goes a very long way, so this will last for a long time.
Pros
- Illuminating
- Lightweight gel texture
Cons
- May be too glowy for oily skin
20. Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Universal
"As someone who often ends up with makeup settled and creased into my smile lines," says Who What Wear contributor, Ata-Owaji Victor, "I love using this primer on the days when I need my makeup to really go the distance."
"It's a hydrating balm that applies to skin like butter, keeping it hydrated and nourished all day long. This primer really does what it says on the tin. So use sparingly for dewy looks and for matte finishes."
Pros
- Matte
- Lightweight texture
Cons
- May be too dry for sensitive or dry skin types
21. ONE/SIZE Secure the Blur Makeup Magnet Primer
When it comes to viral products, it's easy to be put off by the fanfare. Scepticism aside, where you do find one popular product - the ONE/SIZE setting spray - you'll often find that there's an equally brilliant product from the brand also waiting in the discovery wings. Much like its beloved setting spray cousin, the primer ONE/SIZE is one to beat for shine control and extending your makeup wear.
Pros
- Blurs pores
- Controls oiliness and shine
Cons
- More expensive than most
