The Experts Agree: These Are the 5 Chicest Trends to Buy Second-Hand This Spring
There's a saying in the fashion world that everything old is new again, and that feels especially appropriate this season. So many of the top trends dominating the runways and my Instagram feed at the moment seem to be rooted in vintage or throwback-inspired looks. Which makes it the perfect time to embrace the sustainable and stylish world of second hand shopping.
Whether you're a total novice or a seasoned pro, beginning the fashion hunt in the world of pre-loved can be daunting. Which is why I've called in the expert: Antonia Johnstone, founder of London's original and leading pre-owned luxury store, Sign of the Times.
As the founder of shop that is a treasure trove of vintage delights, Antonia is an absolute pro at finding second-hand gems. "When I was at university in Bath, there was a tiny store at the end of my road that sold second-hand high street pieces. This was amazing as it meant I could afford brands such as Topshop and Warehouse which, on a student budget, were expensive," Antonia says. "That sparked the idea of me starting Sign of the Times. I think it was the thrill of the find and sourcing amazing pieces that I could otherwise not afford."
Whatever you're shopping for, Antonia has a few tricks and tips for securing the best finds. First, do you due diligence. "If you are buying from a marketplace, make sure there are multiple positive reviews because often when people list a product without any reviews, it can be for a fake item," Antonia says. "You want to buy from a reputable source, and somewhere that if you feel it isn’t authentic, you can get your money back."
Second, while online sellers offer a world of opportunities, in-person may still be your best bet. "Where possible go to pre-loved brands that have a store, so you can see the pieces in front of you and assess the quality," Antonia says. If you do go for the in-person experience, Antonia recommends putting in the effort to get to know the teams so that they become your best ally—"With Sign of the Times, the styling team will help pick out pieces for you, style you and hold products for you, so it makes the in-store second hand shopping experience very much like new."
As a seasoned pro, Antonia constantly has her eye on the pieces and trends that are on the top of pre-loved wish lists for second-hand sleuths. These span the classics—yes, including the Hermès Kelly ("ideally the 28, not 32")—but also a number of the throwback looks that have once again become the height of fashion. Below, find her pick of the best spring trends to shop second-hand.
1. Leopard Print
Style Notes: The once fashion-scorned print (Janice from Friends, anyone?) has made a seriously stylish comeback this season. From subtle flats to statement-making dresses, this is the throwback print to thrift this spring.
The late, great Roberto Cavalli was the king of sexy animal prints, and this maxi is a perfect example.
Tote bags are another big trend this season, so this is ticking off two boxes.
2. Denim
Style Notes: I'd like to think it's Beyonce's cowboy-inspired album and her song Levi Jeans that are behind the denim renaissance...regardless, Antonia says second-hand denim is hugely popular at the moment. It's no surprise—vintage denim tends to have the best fit and that beautiful tone that new pairs can never quite achieve.
It's always a great sign when the tag is still on—this is a fraction of what they cost brand new.
If you want to invest in a statement vintage pair, these are a great option.
Really lean into the denim look by going for a Canadian tuxedo with a matching denim jacket.
3. Kitten Heels
Style Notes: The semi-practical heel is back at the top of the footwear charts this season. Whether you go for a peep toe or a pointed, a designer kitten heel is definitely one you should consider getting second hand—according to Antonia, Miu Miu is the most popular kitten heel brand at the moment.
How perfect would these be for spring/summer event dressing?
Make the kitten heel extra comfortable by going for a block heel—these Chanel slingbacks are such a classic.
These embellished heels are party ready.
4. Slip dresses
Style Notes: Shopping for second hand slip dresses can be tricky, as this is an item you don't want to necessarily look vintage. Antonia notes that slip dresses from The Row are very popular right now, so keep an eye out for sleek, minimalist versions that you can get for a fraction of the price if you thrift.
This would have you feeling like an A-lister.
Such a gorgeous 90s aesthetic.
5. 90s Bags
Style Notes: The 90s are the decade to embrace this season, and that's reflected in the current love for throwback bag styles. "At Sign we are seeing searches for vintage bags styles like the Fendi baguette," says Antonia. " The Balenciaga City bag [technically a 2001 release] is also definitely making a come back, too."
