I'm Now Into Daytime Sequins—Feel Free to Use My Outfit Formulas

Sometimes it feels like fashion trends are divided into two categories: ones that would happily slot into our capsule wardrobes and ones we mere mortals wouldn't think of trying. When I first spotted sequins on the runway at London Fashion Week, I mentally placed them in the latter category (which, incidentally, also includes cycling shorts and PVC shoes). However, as the days went on and more and more high-shine pieces appeared in the shows (and on the stylish women who attended them), I started to question my initial dismissal of the sequin trend. After all, for 2018, it's less about spangled party looks and all about high/low styling.

Inspired by the looks I saw at fashion week, I decided to create three outfits that incorporated sequins for the daytime, to prove that anyone can work the trend (it's easier than it sounds—trust me). While I'm by no means an extroverted dresser, I do love the odd statement fabric—think a flash of animal print or hit of high-shine patent—and I think when it comes to styling the sequin trend, the same rules apply. For me, the aim was to bring some of the sequins' sassiness back down to earth via smart wardrobe staples and low-key separates. The result is a chic hybrid look that would work just as well for Friday night drinks as it would for the weekend.

Style Notes: Olivia Palermo pairs a sequin midi with a dressed-down bomber for the ultimate high/low look.

Style Notes: The sneaky sequinned lining of Eva Chen's trench is such a cool way to incorporate sparkle into your daytime outfits.

Style Notes: Another day, another sequin skirt, but this time rendered in pastel pink and styled with a statement white shirt and trainers.

Style Notes: Chiara Ferragni's sequined cami might feel quite "night out," but layer it over a long-sleeved top and throw on a blazer et voilà: It's daytime ready.

Style Notes: This look was inspired by a street style shot of a blogger who cleverly used ripped denim to dress down a statement sequin top. This Zara blouse is so light and comfortable to wear (however, the keyhole detail is a little low—could reveal your bra), and it looks great tucked into a pair of distressed mom jeans. A camel blazer completes the look nicely with a tailored finish.

Style Notes: I saw so many people rocking the sequinned skirt in myriad this fashion week, and while it might look intimidating, it's just as easy to style as any other statement skirt. The key is to mix with contrasting textures; for example, this Mango sequin midi is made daytime-ready with Acne's soft wool knit and a pair of leather, knee-high boots. Throw on a camel coat and you're ready to go.

Style Notes: If you're more inclined towards a statement accessory, look no further than this Ashish leopard-print sequin bag. Packing plenty of personality (and belongings—this bag is seriously roomy), it's best to keep the rest of your outfit low-key. Personally, I would use it to liven up my favourite Other Stories trench.
