Sheer Skirts Are One of Spring 2025's Chicest Trends—4 Styles I've Tried and Loved

Sheer skirts have been trending for a couple of seasons now, but this spring, they are set to migrate from daring eveningwear to something more every day. Dressed down with an oversized shirt and sandals, they make for a great summer barbecue or beach lunch outfit. Styled with an oversized tee and low slingbacks, there’s no reason you can’t wear one to a laid-back dinner with friends.

If the thought of flashing your knickers feels daunting, look for skirts made from less translucent fabrics or pieces with an inbuilt miniskirt. To keep the look chic, I recommend sticking to more neutral colours and keeping the styling simple, avoiding fussy tops or mega-high heels. An oversized top half of the outfit—whether a leather bomber or a baggy tee—also really works to offset the raciness of the exposed lower.

I headed to some of my go-to brands to try on the sheer skirting they had to offer so that you don’t have to. Keep scrolling to see and shop the four best sheer skirts I found.

The Best Sheer Skirts for Spring 2025:

1. The Everyday Option: Zara

Style Notes: Of all the sheer skirts I tried, this beige Zara one was my favourite, and the one that came home with me. Unlike most others in this category, the Zara skirt is only semi-sheer meaning that it feels much easier to wear, particularly in the daytime. The built-in skirt means you don’t need to worry too much about what undies you wear with it, although a nude shade is best to be safe. It’s made of a super lightweight fabric that looks almost like linen but is soft to the touch and doesn’t crease. I think styled with a white tank, brown heels and a brown leather bomber it makes a great summer night out look, but it would also work well with flat strappy sandals, a white linen shirt and some chunky gold jewellery for a summer lunch.

2. For a Formal Event: The Frankie Shop

Style Notes: The Frankie Shop’s sheer Peri skirt has been a go-to among fashion girls for a few seasons now. And trying it on for the first time in Selfridges, I understood the appeal. Made from 55% silk (the rest is polyamide), the skirt has a bit more structure than some others on the shelves it feels almost like a taffeta giving it a slightly more elevated feel that offsets the item’s inherent sauciness. The only downside of the structure is that it’s a less fluid fit; I found that the hip shape was a bit too big (I’m an 8 and I wore a small), so it’s worth trying it before you buy. I styled it with the brands oversized tee in grey, which is so big I sized down to an XS so there wasn’t too much fabric to tuck in. If you want to dress it up the brand also does a matching sheer silk-blend shirt this set also comes in a lovely taupe brown.

3. The Designer-Looking Option: H&M

Style Notes: If you’re looking for a mega bargain that is more than a little bit reminiscent of the skirts on the Saint Laurent AW24 runway, then this H&M piece could be the one for you. The deep chocolate brown is bang-on-trend, and the fabric is stretchy which makes this one comfortable to wear. That said, this one sits at the more transparent end of the skirt spectrum, so it’s not for the sartorially shy. It very much feels like eveningwear and spicy eveningwear at that. It’s the only sheer skirt I found that had inbuilt knickers, which make life easier. Although they are a classic knicker cut not a boxer, which means given the skirt is so sheer you have a little cheek on show. I think it looks great styled, as they did at the Saint Laurent show, as a monochrome look so I paired it with a matching hue top. If you were worried about baring all, you could style this skirt with an oversized shirt and slip-on mules for a more relaxed summer evening look. The more laid-back stretch fabric means it would also work well over swimwear for a beach lunch.

4. For the Bold Dressers: Mango

Style Notes: There’s sheer and then there’s almost see-through, and this black Mango skirt is closer to the latter. Despite its “semi-transparent” description on the Mango website, this skirt is more like 90% transparent. And with no inbuilt underwear, it's certainly one that requires a little pant-flashing poise. You’ll need some good black boxer short-style pants the SKIMS ones are excellent, but H&M also does a super affordable version that I’m wearing in these pics and a confident stride. The transparency is offset by the slightly formal fabric, which is a lovely Mulberry silk blend. It doesn’t have the same quality feel of The Frankie shop silk blend, but it’s certainly more structured than the Zara and H&M options, and the pocket details mean it avoids looking too Emperor’s New Clothes. I think with a skirt this sheer you want to avoid styling it with anything too complicated or dressy I like it with a heavy cotton oversized tee and low slingbacks. I opted for all-black and broke it up with a silver belt, but it would also work with white or grey.
