I'm a Stylist—11 Fresh Outfit Formulas I'll Definitely Be Trying This Year
Everyone needs to refresh their outfit roster from time to time. Fact. Even hardcore minimalists and capsule wardrobe devotees can become fatigued with their everyday uniform. We're only human, after all.
Do combinations that were once fresh and exciting feel increasingly stale with each wear? That's par for the course. If you ate the same breakfast every single morning, you'd probably get bored of that, too. The good news is you don't have to overhaul your closet or part with tons of your hard-earned cash to rediscover your love of getting dressed. Like changing up your porridge toppings, sometimes small styling tweaks are all it takes.
And you can hold me to this advice, because I've resolved to step outside my sartorial comfort zone in 2023. As someone who typically reaches for the same 3-5 items on a daily basis (usually an oversized jumper, jeans or wide-leg trousers, Chelsea boots and a long coat), I'm in desperate need of some new ideas. So, I spent some time gathering street style and influencer outfits that I could see myself *realistically* trying out this year. And most of them can be crafted from staples I already own. Rejoice!
In the same boat as me? Keep scrolling for 11 fresh outfit ideas for 2023. Plus, discover the pieces you might need to help recreate the looks.
1. Relaxed Suit + Bandeau Top
Style Notes: Heads up—you'll be seeing a lot of bra-style tops in 2023. So many Fashion Week attendees wore theirs with relaxed suiting and it looked cool every time.
SHOP THE LOOK:
The beige blazer is one of our editors' all-time favourite buys.
The suit can be styled casually or smartened up for more formal occasions.
SKIMS sure knows how to make flattering pieces.
2. Barrel Jeans + Pointed Flats
Style Notes: Balance out your baggy jeans by slipping your feet into a neat pointed-toe flat. Mary-Janes are the fashion crowds' shoe of choice for 2023 and beyond.
SHOP THE LOOK:
3. Dark Double Denim
Style Notes: Double denim made a comeback in 2022, and this year I'll continue to wear the trend but instead of blue, I'll stick to black and charcoal washes. It feels more ‘me’ than blue-on-blue.
SHOP THE LOOK:
A great extra layer to take the edge off.
4. Open-Knit Jumper + Split-Hem Trousers
Style Notes: Knitwear that looks like it's been homespun can be really eye-catching, especially when worn with sleek split-hem trousers and in a tonal hue.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Crochet knitwear is one of my favourite micro trends for 2023.
5. Leather Jacket + Sheer-Panel Skirt
Style Notes: There's a huge focus on texture this season, with sheer fabrications and super-soft leather firmly in the spotlight.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Size up for a more laid-back fit.
This skirt is so easy to dress up or down and is a subtle way to take on the naked skirt trend.
6. Party Dress + Cowboy Boots
Style Notes: Reluctant to stash all your partywear away? Find a way to style it casually instead. I'll be trying this party-dress-and-cowboy-boots look ASAP.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Reformation's dresses always fit so beautifully.
7. Biker Jacket + Wide Jeans
Style Notes: Tomorrow's outfit, sorted. You can probably recreate this using pieces you already own.
SHOP THE LOOK:
All Saint should be your first port-of-call when you're looking for a high-quality leather jacket.
8. Loose Button-Up + Tweed Skirt
Style Notes: I'm planning to fully embrace the mini skirt trend this year, and I'll be starting with this effortless ensemble.
SHOP THE LOOK:
This rust colour palette works so well with neutrals.
9. Long Coat + Maxi Skirt
Style Notes: Bundle up from the cold with a longline coat and team it with a ground-sweeping skirt. So elegant.
SHOP THE LOOK
I'd layer this over jeans and a jumper on those lazy mornings.
This abstract print is so striking.
10. Fringed Cardigan + Straight-Leg Jeans
Style Notes: Refresh your knitwear repertoire by adding a style with fringing. Let this detail do the talking and keep the rest of your outfit simple.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Style with cowboy boots if you really want to lean into the western trend.
11. Denim Midi + Loafers
A pair of black leather loafers will instantly smarten up your denim skirt.
