I'm an Aesthetician—These Are the Eye Creams That Actually Work on Dark Circles
A tried, tested and aesthetician-approved list of the best vitamin C eye creams.

As an esthetician, the product I get asked about most—hands down—is something to help get rid of dark circles. The request usually sounds the same: “Do you know anything that actually works?” And while I wish there was a single miracle cream to erase tired eyes overnight, the truth is a little more nuanced. Dark circles are complex, often rooted in genetics, influenced by sleep, stress, and even diet, so no topical product can completely erase them. But if there’s one ingredient I consistently recommend (aside from a good concealer for dark circles, or in-clinic dark circle treatments) for helping brighten, smooth, and revitalise the under-eye area, it’s vitamin C.
Vitamin C eye creams are some of my favourite formulas because they stay focused. Rather than trying to tackle ten concerns at once (which usually results in them doing very little), the best ones focus solely on targeting the tone and radiance of the skin. They’re antioxidant-rich, often paired with hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients and work especially well when used frequently and consistently. Whether you’re new to eye creams or hunting for something that finally makes you look a little more awake, these are the vitamin C eye creams worth knowing about if you're looking for a good eye cream for dark circles.
What does a vitamin C eye cream do?
These eye creams work by harnessing the brightening, antioxidant power of vitamin C to target some of the most common concerns around the eyes—namely dark circles, fine lines, and uneven pigmentation. As an antioxidant, vitamin C helps neutralise free radicals caused by UV exposure and pollution, which can contribute to premature ageing and dullness. It also supports collagen production, which means it can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin firmness over time. For dark circles, vitamin C’s ability to brighten and even skin tone makes it particularly useful for treating pigmentation-related discolouration. While it won’t erase hereditary shadows or puffiness caused by fluid retention, it can make the under-eye area appear more radiant, smooth, and well-rested with consistent use.
"Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that targets darkness, fine lines and dullness by boosting elasticity and enhancing brightness," explains Mary-Ann Keenan, senior content
artistry manager at Ole Henriksen.
And one of the best things about it for under-eyes is that the benefits are two-fold. "Short term, [vitamin C] provides an instant glow... but over time you will see visibly brighter, smoother and hydrated under-eyes," says Keenan.
Of course, this is all good news for tired eyes, but Keenan does point out that it's important to choose a vitamin C formula that's suitable for the under-eyes. For visible results that won't irritate the delicate skin around our eyes, Keenan recommends seeking out a stable, low concentration of vitamin C mixed with a pure form of vitamin C like ascorbic acid.
How to apply vitamin C eye cream
When applying eye cream, I always advise my clients to use their ring fingers. It’s the weakest of all the fingers, meaning it naturally applies the lightest pressure, which helps to minimise tugging or stretching of the delicate eye area. Just tap a pea-sized amount around the orbital bone, starting from the inner corners and working outwards. I recommend applying a vitamin C eye cream in the morning after cleansing and before sunscreen, so you get the full benefit of vitamin C’s brightening and antioxidant powers throughout the day.
The best vitamin C eye creams
- Best Overall: Dermalogica Biolumin C Eye Cream
- Best for Dark Circles: Ole Henriksen Banana Bright+ Eye Creme
- Best for Fine Lines: Kiehls Powerful Line Reducing Eye Serum
- Best for Puffiness: Byoma Depuff and Brighten Eye Gel
- Best for Pigmentation: Dr Sam's Flawless Brightly Eye Serum
1. Dermalogica Biolumin C Eye Serum
Dermalogica’s Biolumin-C Serum has long been one of my favourite (and in my opinion, most effective) vitamin C serums, so I was very intrigued and excited when they launched an eye version. Thankfully, it didn’t disappoint. The texture is lightweight and silky, sinking in fast without leaving any residue. It’s become a go-to for brightening and smoothing my under-eyes because yes, it actually works.
Pros
- Brightens and hydrates
- Absorbs instantly
- Suitable for sensitive skin
Cons
- Expensive price point
I’ve gone through several pots of this over the years, and every time I come back to it, I’m reminded why it’s such a cult favourite. The best thing about it is the soft-focus brightening pigments—it doesn’t just promise to brighten over time, it actually makes you look more awake the second you put it on. Sure, the effect is mostly cosmetic and not a long-term fix, but when your dark circles are genetic and stubbornly resistant to topical treatments, that kind of instant payoff is honestly a game-changer. It also layers beautifully under makeup, which is always a bonus.
Pros
- Instantly brightens under-eye area thanks to banana-powder inspired mineral pigment
- Hydrating cream texture
Cons
- Some sensitive skin users may experience irritation
- The brightening effect is temporary (cosmetic pigment)
3. Kiehl's Powerful Line Reducing Eye Serum, 15ml
Best for fine lines
This is the one to reach for when your eye area is looking more lined and wrinkled. It’s powered by vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, so you get that rare combination of firming and hydrating in one formula. I’ve found it makes a visible difference to the appearance of fine lines and crow’s feet with consistent use—the whole area feels smoother, more elastic, and just a bit more lifted. It’s not the most instantly gratifying, but if you’re in it for long-term results, this is a solid investment.
Pros
- Smooths fine lines
- Provides smooth base for makeup
Cons
- Potent formula may be too active for sensitive complexions
4. Byoma De-Puff and Brighten Eye Gel
This is one of those products I instinctively reach for on mornings after poor sleep or a late night—when puffiness is unavoidable and concealer alone won’t cut it. While it won’t erase dark circles overnight, it’s brilliant for de-puffing and calming, especially if you keep it in the fridge. It’s lightweight, layers beautifully under makeup and is surprisingly effective for the price.
Pros
- Delivers instant cooling and hydration
- Fragrance‑free
Cons
- Pump dispenser is inconsistent and occasionally faulty
5. Dr Sam's Flawless Brightly Eye Serum
This is the eye treatment I recommend most often to clients with mature skin or who are noticing early signs of ageing around the eyes. The formula is packed with clinically-backed ingredients—a retinoid, niacinamide and vitamin C—but works in a way that feels gentle, not irritating. It’s more serum than cream, which means it sinks in fast and doesn’t skimp on results: think smoother texture, softened fine lines and a brighter overall eye area. Like I said, multitasking eye products aren't always that great, but this is an exception—it does a lot without shouting about it.
Pros
- Contains clinically-backed ingredients
- Gentle enough for sensitive eyes
Cons
- A little more on the expensive side
6. Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream
This is one of those eye creams I always circle back to when clients ask about dark spots, sun damage, or pigmentation around the eyes. With five forms of vitamin C and a cocktail of peptides and soothing ingredients, it targets hyperpigmentation gently but effectively—perfect for brightening without irritation. The texture is buttery but not heavy, and I’ve found it layers beautifully under makeup. If you’re consistent, this really helps to fade stubborn marks and even out tone in a way that feels low-maintenance but has high impact.
Pros
- Layers smoothly under makeup
Cons
- May not be hydrating enough for dry skin types
7. Paula's Choice C5 Super Boost Eye Cream
A lot of vitamin C eye creams can feel too lightweight or leave the under-eye area feeling tight, but this has a richer, creamier texture that dry skin types will love. It’s packed with vitamin C for brightening, of course, but also includes replenishing ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid that give it a comforting, cushiony feel. I’ve recommended this to clients with dry, crepey under-eyes and they always comment on how much softer and smoother their skin feels after just a few uses.
Pros
- Hydrating cream texture
- Pump packaging preserves formula
Cons
- Expensive price point
- Occasionally pills when layered with certain makeup products
8. Roc Multi Correxion Revive + Glow Eye Balm
Best for easy application
This is one of those products that makes you'll actually look forward to applying. The solid balm texture glides on effortlessly thanks to its smooth balm format—perfect for those rushed mornings when you still want to feel like you’re doing something good for your skin. It gives an instant hit of hydration, and while the vitamin C works on brightening over time, the subtle tint helps to mute dark circles immediately. Honestly, the applicator alone makes it one of the most enjoyable formulas I’ve tried.
Pros
- Easy to apply
- Instantly brightens
Cons
- Non-hygenic packaging
- Some may find the balm feels too thick
10. Glow Recipe Guava Vitamin C Bright-Eye Gel Cream
If you have sensitive skin around your eyes, this gel cream is a total game changer. It delivers a gentle yet effective dose of vitamin C without any irritation or stinging, which can be rare in brightening eye products. The lightweight, soothing texture absorbs quickly and leaves the under-eye feeling refreshed and hydrated—perfect for those with delicate, easily-reactive skin.
Pros
- Lightweight, cooling gel
Cons
- Packaging makes accessing last of the product difficult
10. Tatcha The Brightening Eye Cream
Granted, this one is expensive, but in my opinion the potent and luxurious formula totally warrants the high price point. The texture is rich but melts effortlessly into the skin, delivering a burst of hydration and gentle brightening benefits. It’s packed with Japanese botanicals that soothe and nourish, making it the kind of product you can apply both morning and night.
Pros
- Immediately refreshing and hydrating
- Smooths fine lines under concealer
Cons
- Expensive price point
- Packaging is not airtight
11. Q+A Vitamin C Eye Cream
For anyone who wants to brighten and refresh their under-eye area without breaking the bank, this one’s a real (underrated) gem. It delivers a solid dose of vitamin C to tackle dullness and uneven tone, all in a lightweight formula that’s easy to layer. While it may not deliver results as quickly or as visibly as other products in this list, it proves that you don’t always need a luxury price tag to find an effective, everyday vitamin C eye cream.
Pros
- Non-irritating and hydrating for sensitive skin
- Affordable price point
Cons
- Cream formula may be too thick for some users
- Limited availability
How we tested
As a beauty editor, I’ve had the opportunity to try countless eye creams over the years—everything from drugstore staples to high-end treatments. And as an esthetician, I know that one of the most common concerns clients bring up is dark circles, often paired with puffiness, dullness, or dehydration. For this guide, I included eye creams that I've personally tried and tested and that I've had good feedback on from my clients, paying close attention to texture, wearability under makeup, irritation potential, and—most importantly—visible improvements in brightness and skin tone.
