The Best Fringes for Every Face Shape, According to a Top Hairstylist
Getting a fringe is not an easy decision. This simple haircut can change your whole look, and while some of us decide to get it on a whim, many of us spend months deciding whether we want to take the plunge or not. The problem is, there are so many different fringe trends out there that it can be hard to know what to go for. Do you want a blunt fringe? Curtain bangs? A wispy fringe? The options can feel endless.
One thing that I like to do is speak to my hairdresser to see what fringe will actually work with my face shape. Don't get me wrong, trends are a great place to start, but I always advise taking these with a pinch of salt and doing a little bit of research into what style might work for you and your desired look. If you want to get an expert's opinion on the best fringe for your face shape then you've come to the right place, as I reached out to Grace Amelia, senior stylist at Hershesons, to find out which fringe hairstyles she recommends.
Of course, this advice is just here for those of you who want to know what fringe might work best for you, but it's not to say that you can't try another style out. Here at Who What Wear we're all about doing what makes you feel your very best.
With that in mind, keep on scrolling for all the expert advice and lots of inspiration to screenshot and show your hairstylist...
The Best Fringe for Your Face Shape, as Recommended by an Expert
- Best Fringe for Round Faces: Side Fringe
- Best Fringe for Oval Faces: Blunt Fringe
- Best Fringe for Heart Faces: Curtain Bangs
- Best Fringe for Square Faces: Long Fringe
- Best Fringe for Diamond Faces: Wispy Fringe
1. Best Fringe for Round Faces: Side Fringe
According to Amelia, "a round face suits side or slightly off-centre bangs as this can elongate the face, softening the roundness and adding angles for a more balanced look." Of course we think that any fringe looks beautiful on any face shape, but these celebs prove just how flattering a side fringe can be.
Both side partings and side fringes are back in a big way this season so now is the perfect time to give this style a go.
Simply stunning.
2. Best Fringe for Oval Faces: Blunt Fringe
A blunt fringe is a classic choice for anyone and everyone, but according to Amelia, they can also work well for oval face shapes. "Shorter, slightly blunter bangs work well with an oval face shape as it is well-proportioned," she says. "Blunt bangs complement the symmetry, adding a flattering structure."
There really is something so chic about this more structured hairstyle, and Bella Hadid might just have convinced me to give it a go.
Florence Pugh always looks so cool with her blunt fringe.
3. Best Fringe for Heart Faces: Curtain Bangs
Curtain bangs are so stylish right now and one look on Instagram proves that they look incredible no matter what your face shape. That being said, if you have a heart face shape and are not sure what sort of fringe to go for, curtain bangs could be a great place to start. "Heart shape faces look best with curtain bang fringes as it helps balance the forehead and accentuate the cheekbones for a harmonious effect," explains Amelia.
Curtain bangs and curls are a match made in heaven if you ask me.
They look great with an updo.
4. Best Fringe for Square Faces: Long Fringe
Amelia tells me that longer bangs can really suit a square face shape. In order to get the most out of this style, ask your hairdresser to make the shortest point of your fringe sit along your jaw, as this can help soften strong jawlines and add to angular features. No matter what your face shape, this style is great for those of you who are hesitant to get a full-on fringe and want to experiment with some face-framing pieces first.
This style really does add a soft finish to your look.
So cute!
5. Best Fringe for Diamond Faces: Wispy Fringe
How stunning is a wispy fringe? There are so many ways to wear this style. and it works especially well for those of you with diamond face shapes. "Diamond face shapes sit well with wispy soft fringes [as they can] narrow and soften the sharpness of the cheekbones for a balanced finish," says Amelia.
A wispy fringe looks so effortless. No matter what your face shape, I highly recommend giving this style a go this autumn!
I mean...it doesn't get much chicer than this.
