17 New-In Anti-Trend Items From H&M That Have My 57-Year-Old Mum and I Hooked
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: My mum is one of my biggest style inspirations. Having worked as a fashion buyer for over 30 years, my mum has her personal style nailed down to a tee, and I don't think I've ever seen her in an outfit that I don't immediately want to add to my own wardrobe. Practically everyone in my family—including my boyfriend—goes to her for style advice, and since we now both work in fashion, we are constantly messaging one another with links to pieces we love, from investment buys that are on our wish lists to high-street items that have our attention.
Despite an age gap of over 30 years, my mum and I rarely disagree on fashion, and we live by a "what's mine, is yours" approach when it comes to our closets. We might wear different dress sizes—she wears a size smaller than me and I'm about 2 inches taller—but, luckily, there are tons of pieces that we regularly swap, from denim that works with both of our body shapes to forever handbags, and evening-ready tops to holiday-ready dresses. I've even been known to steal a bikini or two from her before!
Just this morning, I sent her a bunch of links to some really expensive-looking, new-in H&M products that I loved for both of us, and she followed up with a few she'd spotted for our mutual wardrobe, too. What followed was a list of 19, anti-trend items that make up a uber-chic capsule wardrobe. One that both my mum and I will both be relying on throughout the season. See our favourite H&M picks below...
My mum and I regularly share the contents of our wardrobes with one another, despite a more than 30-year age gap.

We've both been searching high and low for a chic beige coat, and I think this is the winner.
A black satin dress is something that we both feel is missing from our wardrobes. Dress this tie-neck style up with heels and statement earrings or down with a chunky cardigan and riding boots.
We're both cardigan people, and I know this fine-knit navy style will work hard for us from winter and well into spring.
I already have this jumper, and now my mum has ordered the same. We'd suggest going down a size as it's already quite a relaxed fit.
My mum and I have both been boho fashion fans (long before it became cool again!) and this chiffon dress is right up our street. I'd wear it with knee-high boots, while my mum would add heels for a dinner date.
Speaking of cashmere jumpers... H&M's always sell out, and this new-in style is sure to follow suit.
We said to one another earlier this season that we both were after a wool-blend blazer. This one ticks all our boxes thanks to the double-breasted silhouette, dark navy hue and slightly warmer fabrication (it's not wool, but it is thicker than other cotton styles).
I'm after some riding-style boots to wear with all my dresses this season, and my mum sent me these earlier this week. I love the slightly preppy feel to them, as well as the subtle buckle detail.
We've both already ordered and worn this tuxedo shirt. It looks so much more expensive than it is and is much more flattering on my body shape than a standard open-collar shirt.
Ok, hear us out. On first glance this isn't exactly anti-trend, but we both feel a sequin skirt is actually such a classic. Dial the look down by adding a big cashmere jumper and trainers.
Another pretty boho number that we both think is worth investing in.
From the full skirt to the silver pumps, we both just love this entire look. You could also wear the skirt with a jumper or blazer during the week.
If you know me, you know I love any sort of bandana or neck tie situation. So it will come as no surprise to find out that this is already in my basket...

Or better yet, all three!
Born and raised in London, Poppy is a true city girl. Her favourite London spots are Caravel for dinner, the Ham Yard Hotel for a fancy pre-theatre drink, Daunt Books for a new read, 26Grains for breakfast and Coal Drop's Yard for a spot of shopping.
