There's no doubt that gender-orientated perfumes should be a thing of the past. Scents shouldn't be assigned "male” or "female” as arguably all fragrances are unisex—it’s completely subjective, as our olfactory nerves will tell us what we like and don’t like regardless of how we identify. However, there are some incredible scents out there that are considered more "unisex" than others. While I'm quite the fan of perhaps what would be considered "feminine" fragrances—Diptyque's Eau de Rose is one of my favourites—I have a soft spot for the "unisex” fragrance. It all started, of course, with CK One way back in the '90s. But more recently, it was Glossier's You perfume that launched in 2017 that really turned my head. It is warm and creamy and it moulds itself to your own personal scent, which is why it’s described as a ‘skin enhancer’ not a perfume and has the effect of getting you to move closer to the person who's wearing it, just so you can get an even better whiff.
Now, I’m not saying that’s the case with all similar fragrances, but if Glossier’s idea of a unisex perfume has you intrigued, allow me to list some of my favourites. Quite often with unisex fragrances, you'll find more smoky notes and sandalwood and citrus scents in there. Keep scrolling to see my selection of the unisex fragrances I can't get enough of.
1. Vilhelm Parfumerie Eau de Parfum in Dear Polly
The moment I smelled this fragrance, I was hooked.
2. Glossier You
This fragrance actually changes depending on who's wearing it—subtle but with a hint of seduction.
3. Byredo Gypsy Water
Pine needle, sandalwood, and lemon combine to create one of the most popular perfumes around.
4. Aesop Marrakech Intense Eau de Toilette
As with everything this brand does, the product is unisex. Expect to smell a heady, woody blend.
5. Le Labo Santal 33 Eau de Parfum
This one's a classic but for a reason. The notes of wood alloy, spices, and leather create an addictive fragrance.
6. Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Eau de Parfum
I don’t think any perfume list is complete without a Tom Ford scent. This is reminiscent of holidays in Italy—with citrus and amber notes.
7. Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 Iso E Super
Similar to Glossier (although this came first) Escentric Molecules' Molecule 01 creates a unique scent when applied. Intriguing.
8. Malin+Goetz Dark Rum Perfume Oil
Anything I’ve ever smelt from this brand has only been brilliant. And it’s never been overpoweringly sweet—a true sign of sophistication in my books. Also, my husband is a real fan of this, too.
9. Maison Crivelli Citrus Batikanga
Notes of bergamot combine with chilli and warm notes of wood and myrrh. Delicious.
10. Le Labo Another 13 Eau de Parfum
"Hypnotising” and "unique” is how this fragrance is described. It is musky with notes of jasmine.
11. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Eau de Parfum Silver Edition
Notes of amber and vanilla make this a soft perfume with a little bit of spice.
12. Arket Perfume Oil in Oakmoss
Don’t overlook the high street when it comes to perfumes. Every one of Arket’s home fragrances is potent but suitable for everyone. This Oakmoss Perfume Oil is deep and earthy.
13. Zara Ebony Wood
Created with the ultimate British perfumer, Jo Malone, this is a mix of pink peppercorn, clove, and ebony wood.
14. Other Stories Arabesque Wood Eau de Toilette
Fresh lemon and ginger bring a fresh scent to the woody depth of moss and amber.
15. Clean Reserve Smoked Vetiver Eau de Parfum
This is a light fragrance for everyone with notes of vetiver. If you want something stronger, you can layer other fragrances over the top.
16. Diptyque Géranium Odorata Eau de Toilette
Think florals aren't gender-neutral? Think again. This smells like a garden but is crisp and light.
